Kaiser Permanente officials announced Tuesday that they are expanding COVID-19 vaccine trials to include children ages 5-11 in Oakland, Santa Clara and Sacramento.
The three trial sites on Monday began enrolling roughly 75 children in the 5-11 age range.
Kaiser’s Vaccine Study Center and Division of Research, both based in Oakland, are conducting the trial in concert with Pfizer and BioNTech, which co-developed the vaccine that will be used in the trial. The Pfizer vaccine is currently the only COVID-19 vaccine approved for minors.
Roughly 4,600 children are participating in trials across the country to determine the vaccine’s safety and efficacy in children under 12.
“There’s a lot of vigorous interest right now in terms of availability and there’s limited availability” for the study, said Vaccine Study Center Director Dr. Nicky Klein.
Kaiser’s Vaccine Study Center also participated in the clinical trials to determine the safety and efficacy of the Pfizer vaccine both in adults and children ages 12-17.
In the coming weeks, trials are also likely to open for children under age 5, Klein said, as logistics and finer details are still being worked out. Eventually, she said, medical experts intend to recommend that all children receive the vaccine once it is available to them.
On the trial’s current timeline, Klein said Pfizer could submit an emergency authorization for children 5-11 as early as September, provided the trial’s data shows the vaccine is as effective as it has been for other age groups.
“It may be around the start of school,” she said. “(That’s) probably the best-case scenario, but I think that’s still up in the air.”

Not a large enough trial to measure the likelihood of rare but serious side effects specific to this age group. Given how low their Covid risk is, this age group should have a really high bar to clear before approval. The really wicked thing that might happen is that school districts/unions pressure politicians to tie full school reopening to vax requirements.
Israel is saying that 1-in-3000 to 1-6000 young males gets myocarditis from the Pfizer vax. If that is true for young kids then this will be a historic fiasco and lead to a huge drop in public trust of vaccine rollouts. Covid is not very dangerous for this group. A vaccine needs to be basically perfect on the safety side for this to be justified.
Note the ending: “emergency use authorization” is the category of approval that will be sought. But Covid is not, and never has been, an emergency for kids 5-11 years of age. imo, that’s not the appropriate bar to clear: this should be a longer term process so that any rare adverse events can be determined *before* this is given to tens of millions of kids in a short time window.

Other than that, I no longer accept conventional opinions as true. Main stream media has proved they are rarely reliable. Doctors are notorious for going along with the status quo. Such as refusing to dispence therapeutics for Covid19.

I don’t think you understand what Vaccine purposes are… Getting young kids Vaccinated has somewhat to do with what is happening right now but more for the future. Being Vaccinated is to help if anything in the FUTURE happens. That hopefully protection will last as NO ONE knows how long they will. Could last 6 months. Could last 1 year. Could last 5-20 years. No one knows. But starting early can try to help prevent issues in the future. Most people on here that say “Can’t believe they doing this to kids and what now” Then they don’t know how any drugs or vaccines ever been produced.
