Went to a free state. Took a 4 day defensive handgun class. Shot an Uzi and a Tommy Gun full auto at lunch. Did the shoot house and shot steel. Put 5 shots in a 1” square at 5 yards. Placed third in the man on man competition. Not bad for a newbie.

Climbing Denali in Alaska (Mt. McKinley), trapped in a storm at 16k for several days with very little food.

What can I say, my best vacation is your worst nightmare.

Took the family to London – my son jumped off the tree that I was too scared to jump off when I was his age. Good to see!

Antler August 5, 2021 - 5:58 PM - 5:58 PM

Ancient Mariner! What fun to take children to the places where you spent your own childhood.
Did you grow up in the Hammersmith district of London? I read that it was completely closed…. as in condemned…. but I’ve not been ble to find out whether it will be built again to look like the beautiful original.

Ancient Mariner August 5, 2021 - 8:17 PM - 8:17 PM

Antler,
We lived in Mortlake for some years and we’d go shopping in Hammersmith – they had some nice old department stores. I remember one where you had to buy the store currency as that’s the only money they would take at the cash registers. They also had these vacuum tubes where the cashiers would put money and receipts into canisters that they would feed into the tubes and the canisters would go whooshing around the store to the accounting department. Very 1920s. Parts were somewhat slummy when I was little – since redeveloped.
Hammersmith Bridge has been closed to vehicles, due to cracking and they’re trying to figure out how to reopen it. Here’s a picture:

I don’t think I can pick a favorite. I liked everyone of them. Camping and fishing with the kids every year when they were younger. Taking a station wagon trip back east with the wife and kids. Hawaii, Alaska and all over Europe. Couldn’t pick a favorite.

To Grandview Campground in the Inyo National Forest with my telescope making friends for some great dark skies. Then off to both rims of the Grand Canyon. Many years ago…..

I’ve actually traveled all around the world quite a few times….. But just today I returned from one of the most pleasant vacations and diversions I ever had: 3 days up in Reno stayed at the Peppermill (which is fabulous) and enjoyed the ‘Hot August nights’ celebration. It’s the annual tribute to old cars music and dress. I was immersed in the 50s 60s and 70s with the cars the music and a lot of really pleasant people who fondly remember the same era. We haven’t cruised a hamburger stand in 50 years! But it was Happy Days all over again up in Reno. We’re sorry we had to leave early as it goes through the end of this week. A total immersion and time machine back to happier era. We’re actually bummed to be back home and living in the 2020s Bay Area.

Ricardoh August 6, 2021 - 12:00 PM - 12:00 PM

If you saw a turquoise 56 chevy station wagon there with a sign on the back that said, “Parking for Italians only” – “Others will be towed” that was a relative of mine by marriage.

Roz August 5, 2021 - 3:36 PM - 3:36 PM

For Me, it was more of who I was with and that would be my Hubby, Daughter & her Hubby (which he was (retired 2020) in the Coast Guards), and we visited where they were. Would have to say the stay in Puerto Rico, with the Zip-line & Bat Cave in 2014 was a adventure. The food was good too.

Cowellian August 5, 2021 - 6:28 PM - 6:28 PM

We lived in Knoxville when the kids were young, and every year, we bought season passes to Dollywood. So this year we rented a cabin overlooking Gatlinburg for our kids as well as their kids, and we took everyone to Dollywood. It was so much fun!
Over the years, we’ve had some great trips, but this year may be our favorite.

Dorothy August 5, 2021 - 7:39 PM - 7:39 PM

Any one of the cross country driving trips with my mom to visit various family, friends. Maybe the first one that included Niagara Falls from the Canada side before passports were required.

Private rafting trip through the Grand Canyon. 18 days and 240 miles. Only flipped the boat once at Chrystal Rapid. Great trip!

Two weeks, 5 islands in Tahiti. Got food poisoning on the first island (Huihine) the doctor got us fixed up pretty good and the rest of the trip was saved. They were filming the movie Bounty on Moorea, so we couldn’t get tanks or a boat, and only got a rental “car” for a few hours, so didn’t see much. One island was an atoll, pretty cool. Took a sailboat to the other side to feed little sharks. My favorite was Bora Bora. You had your own little cabana and they left tanks on your patio so you could go right into the ocean. We had an octopus on one of the pilings. He was so cute.

Chris August 5, 2021 - 10:52 PM - 10:52 PM

Hawaii…3 islands with my boyfriend. My husband couldn’t get away from a company he was starting. It was so memorable because I was doing something wrong but it was so exciting trying not to get caught.

Dr. Jellyfinger August 6, 2021 - 7:00 AM - 7:00 AM

@ Chris ~ Are you a guy or a girl? Either way….. I won’t judge you.
I recall a time some years ago when I had a beautiful 24 year old wife…
it’s kind of a long story but the situation was similar… it led to a divorce.
I’ve always felt kinda bad about it.

Dr. Jellyfinger August 6, 2021 - 2:33 PM - 2:33 PM

Probably the reason I never got married…..

ClayDen August 5, 2021 - 11:11 PM - 11:11 PM

Our best was a two week Viking Ocean cruise from Bergen Norway to the top of Europe with 3 days above the Arctic Circle, then the Shetland and Orkney Islands of Scotland, Edinburgh and finished by cruising up the River Thames to Greenwich (London) where we spent 3 days. Norway is the most beautiful country we’ve ever been to.

hanne jeppesen August 6, 2021 - 12:29 AM - 12:29 AM

Agree with other posters hard to pick one. A few stand out. When I was 18, it was more like a stay vacation. My best girl friend and I had 2 weeks off, she spend one week at my house, and I spend one week at her house. Everyday we took the train to the nearest beach town (where I worked) about 12 miles or so, some guys we knew, had decided to spend a few weeks at the beach in a tent, even though they lived in town. We would hang out with them, at night often go into town, or took the bus to another beach town where they played jazz every Wednesday, even took the bus to Copenhagen to go to Tivoli Garden, had so much fun. Other vacations, when my ex husband and I purchased a BMW from here to be picked up in Munich, we toured southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland Northern Italy and then up to my native Denmark, beautiful trip. Other vacation when I sold long term care insurance I qualified for 2 free trips, on a cruise to Mexico, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán and Cabo San Lucas, and another one 1 1 week in London and surrounding areas ( Windsor Castle, Stratford upon Avon, everything paid for. Last one when my daughter at age 25 toured Europe and I flew over and met her and her friend in Copenhagen, spend some quality time with them and my family, went to Tivoli Gardens, and a few other of my favorite place in my home country, even visited the town I worked in as a teen ager (stay vacation) 25 miles or so south of Copenhagen with my daughter, very special for both of us. Awakening my daughter to her Danish roots, I loved playing tourist guide to her and her friend.

WhoDat Gurl August 6, 2021 - 12:42 PM - 12:42 PM

@ Hanne,

My husband lived in Denmark as a HS senior, and we went back to visit his Rotary host families in 1994. We met up with his friend, Soren Fredricksen, who is a jazz pianist, drank too much Guinness one night, took the train-ferry to Langeland and ate the most unique and wonderful food ever. Loved all the historic treasures in Amelianborg and Kronenborg Castles. Beautiful country and wonderful friendly Danes 💕

I’ve been to many of the most popular destinations in the world.

Honestly, the best time I had was in San Diego about 7 years ago.

That city has everything (beaches, great weather, nice people, vibrant nightlife, great food, etc).

Justaclaycordperson August 6, 2021 - 2:41 PM - 2:41 PM

Most memorable were first time vacations on our 25, 30 and 35th. Anniversaries

25. Hawaii alone without kids. Oahu, Maui and Kauai. Lots to see and do.

30. Alaska cruise on original love boat. We were youngest couple on boat but met two other couples close to our age. Had the best time going on off boat adventures. They assigned a ship officer to sit at assigned table each evening for dinner. The guys wanted the cute blond Doctor, but we got “Ian”who was english handsome and gave us a private tour of the ship. All us ladies went out of our way to flirt with him. Husbands were good sports about it.

35. Went to New England for fall color tour. No reservations except night we arrived and night before flight home. Rented a car and went off exploring, stayed in amazing inns we found in New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts.
Took long walks, not quite hiking pace although some were very close. Ate lobster overlooking the sea. Saw amazing colors in white mountains, fell in love all over again.

Not to forget children, first trip to disneyland and knotts berry farm, wax museum for us, children and mother-in-law. We were all kids on that trip. Everything was new to us and we laughed and just had fun.
Wasn’t as expensive or crowded back then.

hanne jeppesen August 7, 2021 - 9:31 AM - 9:31 AM

Clayden, Thank you for your kind words about my native Denmark. Sounds like you had a great trip, not many American’s can say they have been to Langeland. In fact, although I managed to visit many of my country’s areas and Islands, I have never been to Langeland.

ClayDen August 7, 2021 - 7:21 PM - 7:21 PM

That was WhoDat Gurl who visited Langeland. We stayed with friends in Ystad Sweden and spent a day in Copenhagen and Tivoli with them in 1973. We took the hydrofoil to Copenhagen from Malmo. That was the second best (maybe the best?) vacation we’ve ever been on. We also passed through part of Denmark on our way to Ystad and then to Oslo and then on our way back to Amsterdam, all on the train. We were newly married, almost finished with college and spent the summer (11 weeks) going all over Europe. We got as far south as Potenza Italy and as far north as Bergen Norway. It was an amazing vacation.
