Jasper Wu, a 1-year-old Fremont boy, was sleeping in a car seat on the way home Saturday afternoon when a bullet hit him in the head, killing him, according to the Alameda County coroner’s bureau and a GoFundMe page set up to defray unexpected expenses for his family.

The shooting happened shortly after 2 p.m. on Interstate Highway 880 in Oakland.

Jasper is another victim of violence in Oakland, where 119 people have been murdered this year.

Jasper was rushed to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, where he died. Jasper’s family is asking for the people who fired the bullet to surrender to authorities. The California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation.

“The Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce is disheartened to learn that another life has succumbed due to violence, especially one so young,” Arlene Lum wrote on the GoFundMe page set up for the Wu family.

“(Chamber of Commerce) President Carl Chan met with the family and was further saddened when he was told that Jasper never had a chance to meet his father because his father went back to China and has not been able to return to the United States to be with his wife and see Jasper’s birth because of the COVID travel restrictions,” Lum said.

Jasper’s father Jihao Wu has since been able to get permission to come to the U.S. to make arrangements for his son’s funeral.

CHP Capt. Mike Lehman, in a recorded news conference Monday about the shooting, did not challenge a reporter’s statement that there have been 76 shootings recorded on highways in Oakland in the past 12 months, but he insisted the public should feel safe driving on highways in the city.

When pressed by the same reporter about why people should feel safe given the statistics, Lehman said, “The reason you should feel safe are the chances of this happening are not high.”

As of Tuesday morning, the GoFundMe campaign had raised more than $72,000, doubling its $35,000 goal.

The page is located at THIS LINK.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to please call the CHP investigation tip line at (707) 917-4491.

The woke government will wring their hands and light candles but never do what is necessary. I’m afraid marching around the block holding signs saying stop the killing just won’t hack it.

We avoid Oakland at all cost! The city is out of control, yet the starry eyed mayor Libby is on TV loading about how wonderful Oakland is with all its diversity, inclusion, equity… blab blab liberal talking points. We had to use the Oakland airport, which we do like, but held our breath trying to get there.

Over dramatic much. Never had had any problems in Oakland. Concord was another story. Car stolen from my driveway, psycho meth head neighbor, another neighbor was a perpetrator in an armed robbery, watch multiple drug deals go down and saw the hookers on the corner of Monument & Walters many times. And now Concord has a good sized homeless population and Fentanyl abuse issues. And Concord has shootings as well. Concord has always been dicey but people of Concord live with their heads in the sand. Others in central county have for years “held the nose” if they had to go to Concord. Personally I could not get out fast enough

VB November 9, 2021 - 10:54 PM - 10:54 PM

@Well Folks

Look at violent crime rate:

Concord: 3.67 / 1000 people
Oakland: 16.85 / 1000 people

Concord has always been the low end of central county. Growing up we dreaded having to ever go to Concord. All the ticky tacky tract houses etc….Concord residents are delusional as to their status. Culture was a couple county music bars. Says it all

whome November 10, 2021 - 1:40 PM - 1:40 PM

@Well Folks –
Antidote information in this situation is of no value.

And your opinion of Concord is rather humorous, but not accurate when comparing the two cities.
And you’re grouping ALL of the residents of Concord regarding “the way they are” is ludicrous.
People aren’t that stupid. Even the residents of Concord.

For fun:
Where would you rather be dropped off, between the cities?

* Worst part of Oakland
or
The worst place in Concord.

So much evil exists in society, human life is not valued and violence has risen consistently over the years. Sad to have to admit that America and the world are heading for destruction.

Heartbreaking and sickening, Hundreds of freeway shootings in the Bay Area in the last few years. Go ahead and accuse me of racially profiling but I think we all know what particular group of criminals is responsible for the vast majority of these shootings. Keep your head on a swivel and be aware of your surroundings when driving in this crazy messed up world.

Get out of cities,
The Great Depression is upon us, to be followed by the Great Revolution.

Certainly is Simonpure. Exact Interstate Highway I happened to get on last May thanks to my GPS. I never travel much, know the bay area like the back of my hand, but that was a bad move on my part. Wasn’t sure I was going to make out of that incident. Poor family and little one.

greg November 9, 2021 - 11:28 AM - 11:28 AM

Amazing how many children we willingly sacrifice to the “right” to carry a gun.

Anon November 9, 2021 - 11:44 AM - 11:44 AM

WTF does ownership vs “right to carry” a weapon have to do with this, Nimrod???

Tired November 9, 2021 - 11:52 AM - 11:52 AM

Not true. The piece of garbage who fired the shot (dollars to donuts) got the gune illegally. Don’t equate legal gun ownership with this – thats a disengenuous comparison.

Ricardoh November 9, 2021 - 11:54 AM - 11:54 AM

Greg
Freeway shooters and drive by shooters are all criminals with no right to carry a gun that they probably stole or bought out of a car trunk. Sorry you don’t see the difference.

theunforgiven November 9, 2021 - 12:01 PM - 12:01 PM

Highly doubt it was a legal registered weapon. Probably illegally bought and illegally brought into our country from the south boarder. If you banned all guns then only the bad guys will have them who get them illegally…

HappyPappy November 9, 2021 - 12:06 PM - 12:06 PM

greg is only trolling for attention, nobody is that stupid.

hanne jeppsen November 9, 2021 - 12:18 PM - 12:18 PM

greg, I usually agree with you, but I don’t think this is the right time to bring that up. I’m for a certain amount of gun control, but do believe that owning a gun is a right. I also agree that gun control is out of control. However, I doubt this incident could have been be prevented, even with some gun control, which we already have, some idiot, owning a gun legally and illegally decided to shoot into traffic, don’t know if it was willy nilly or he was trying to hit someone else. Hope he/she gets caught.

Here’s a short article on “internet trolling” from Psychology Today, it used to be an interesting magazine that has leaned “left” the last few years but this article has some merit I believe. There is therapy and a plethora of pills to help people (not to mention names) with this affliction.

Oooppps, here’s the link about why some people troll on blogs from Psychology Today…..https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/experimentations/201908/what-makes-internet-trolls-tick

So sad and tragic. Prayers.

Number One: this is as sad as can be. Terrible.

Number Two: this is the trickle-down effect of democrats ‘transforming’ America. Only in complete chaos can they justify implementing endless big brother.

Chicken Little November 9, 2021 - 12:21 PM - 12:21 PM

If only we had super-strict gun control like, say, Mexico. Then we could be as safe as they are.

Well Folks November 9, 2021 - 10:44 PM - 10:44 PM

Chicken
Maybe a super strict gun law like Japan. Not a lot of bang bang shoot em up like here. Or perhaps like England. Again not a lot of bang bang shoot em up there either

HappyPappy November 9, 2021 - 1:02 PM - 1:02 PM

Who else is willing to throw the switch on that POS when he’s caught?

Chris November 9, 2021 - 4:28 PM - 4:28 PM

First of all, beyond sadness. Secondly, it’s already started with the Mayor of Fremont in which she made the typical useless saying of:
We must stop the violence…oh really?
Political, religious, and community leaders will spout off their messages of how terrible and tragic this incident is with feel good messages of ending gun violence and coming together as a community…blah…blah…blah….
If you want to begin to stopping and reducing these kind of horrible crimes, you have to stop talking tough and to start acting quietly beginning with electing those who will take the necessary steps and actions to try and sentence these monsters to series jail time instead of restorative b.s. justice. Until then, good luck as things will not change but only grow worse as criminals are emboldened by weak laws and woke D.As

Gittyup November 9, 2021 - 7:01 PM - 7:01 PM

So sad. This sweet, innocent child taken by a careless, immature scumbag. This is a crime that is unforgiveable. Condolences to friends and family. Rest in Peace, Jasper.

DD November 10, 2021 - 11:46 AM - 11:46 AM

Just watched mayor Libby discuss this on the news. She touched on peacefully dealing with Oakland violence then elaborated on how the infrastructure bill will fix everything.
