Kaiser Mental Health Clinicians Announce One Day Strike Over Understaffing, Long Patient Wait Times

Kaiser Permanente mental health clinicians in the Bay Area and the Central Valley will hold a one-day strike next week, union officials representing the workers said on Tuesday.

A total of about 2,000 clinicians will stage pickets on Nov. 19 outside Kaiser Hospitals in San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento, and Fresno.

The demonstrations will start at 6 a.m., according to officials with the National Union of Health Workers, which represents the workers.

The striking workers are demanding that Kaiser bargain in good faith to fix what they say is a “broken mental health care system” that’s resulted in patients waiting as long as three months for therapy appointments and left overwhelmed therapists with more patients than they can handle.

Kaiser mental health clinicians have been without a contract since Oct. 1. As they negotiate a new contract, union officials allege Kaiser has rejected union requests to hire more workers, recruit more bilingual and minority therapists, and reduce caseloads for therapists.

Union officials said the need for more clinicians is urgent, as state Senate Bill 221, authored by Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, and signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom last month, is set to go into effect in July 2022.

The law would require health providers to book mental health therapy patients for follow-up appointments within 10 business days unless the clinician determines a longer wait time would not be detrimental to the patient.

“Kaiser has the resources to be the best place to give and receive behavioral health care, but it’s chosen to be the poster child for unequal, unethical care,” NUHW President Sal Rosselli said. “Kaiser’s refusal to even consider proposals to boost staffing and improve care shows that it’s not serious about working with clinicians to fix its mental health care system.”

To meet the shortage of mental health clinicians, Kaiser has said it’s aggressively hiring mental health specialists, hiring more than 600 therapists in California since between 2016 and 2020, and continuing to actively recruit more. In addition, Kaiser also said it has invested some $30 million to train new mental health clinicians statewide.

In a statement, Kaiser Senior Vice President of Human Resources Arlene Peasnall said increasingly unaffordable health care costs paired with escalating wages for mental health care professionals are central to the issue.

“Kaiser Permanente is indisputably one of the most labor-friendly organizations in the United States. We are committed to remaining an employer of choice for mental health professionals, and to continuing to offer our employees market-leading wages and benefits. But we cannot continue to allow costs to grow beyond what our members can afford,” Peasnell said.

“The challenge we are trying to address is that if we continue to increase costs so high above the marketplace, our members will not be able to afford to get the care they need. We have to work together to address this challenge in a way that honors and rewards our employees and recognizes the increasing difficulty our members and customers face in paying for care.”

Peasnell added, “We take seriously any threat to disrupt care. We urge our employees to reject any call for a strike, continue to focus on providing care, and work with us through the bargaining process to finalize a new agreement.”

Yeah. Go on strike to strike understaffing. Your strike just created more understaffing. Anyone who dies tomorrow because you weren’t avail for them is on your hands.

So you’re okay waiting 3 months for an appointment and even when you do get one it might be substandard but one day, with advanced notice, is a bridge too far?

Kaiser EVS is on strike.

I received notice that Kaiser Pharmacy is going on strike and to fill prescriptions now.

Kaiser Nurses are considering striking and now Mental Health is staging a one day strike.

You don’t think that maybe, just maybe there is a problem with Kaiser?!?

Kaiser sucks. They go on strike every year. Same argument with Walmart. But people still choose to work there. So what is the strike next year going to be about? I’m starting to think it might be the workers at this point.. So I don’t use them. You can go on strike all you want but if there’s no one to fill the roles, then it doesn’t accomplish anything. So stay at work and help those that need the help. I’m pretty sure a couple hundred extra employees won’t make the appointment time go down at all. Once they get enough employees to be fully staffed all the overworked employees are going to start taking their vacations and retirements.

And with your strike my appointment will be three months and one day later. And have always been substandard. So again, I choose not to use them anymore. But other people need to keep using them so the other healthcare providers don’t get even more swamped then they are. Because the sh*t is everywhere. Kaiser just likes to roll in it more

I feel for the workers. They are dealing with an assembly line medical system that has been broken for years. It’s suppose to be a “not for profit” system but considering the high premiums and minimal outdated care, people need to wonder where the money goes. And they don’t even deal with mental health crisis issues they ship those to county. It’s time Kaiser members ask lots of questions

Would they accept a new contract with additional hires but no pay raise?

Jeff
They deserve a pay increase. Kaiser takes in hundreds of millions they can afford to give pay increases. Kaiser health care workers are the only health care workers in the bay area paid WORSE than health care workers at Contra Costa County. Now that’s bad

Mental health is something one should not have to wait for. Could be a matter of life or death.

Hmmmm... November 10, 2021 - 9:56 AM - 9:56 AM

Let’s see…

Stationary engineers are on strike against Kaiser for a proposed 1% raise, Two tier system where new hires get lesser benefits, and regional work pooling, where you can be assigned to a site out of area.

Pharmacy Tech/Pharmacy going on strike for similar issues.

Mental Health going on strike over unsafe staffing.

Seems something is going on with Management and Administration at Kaiser.

Everyone is understaffed right now. They need to stay at work like all the workers that have been continuously working understaffed for the last 2 years. The United States is not what it was 2 years ago. SOME people just do not want to return to work.

Would the union accept a new contract with increased staffing and no wage increase?

Like I’ve posted before: I wouldn’t take my dog to Kaiser for anything. Way overpriced for what you (don’t?) get! Lots of stories from friends about being disappointed and/or misdiagnosed by those Quacks. Pay a little more and get way better treatment from their competition.

Well Folks November 10, 2021 - 2:16 PM - 2:16 PM

It says something when the county offers better, more progressive care using the latest practices and medications than what Kaiser offers. And county doesn’t wait for a person to be half dead before referring out to specialist.
And for some of you out there County has paying customers and people that have CCHP as a health plan of choice that they pay for. It is not ALL MediCal.

… I’m torn on this one… the employees deserve more pay – no question… but in Kaiser’s defense they’ve been trying to hire hundreds of nurse’s, etc. many many titles, for years – I’ve been watching looking for a good job fit for myself. Look at jobs at Kaiser and you can select locations.

That’ll show us.
