California State University will no longer use the SAT or ACT tests to help determine who gets admitted as an undergraduate, university officials decided Wednesday.
The university’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved the change following a resolution by the Committee on Education Policy to amend Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations.
The change reflects the permanent adoption of a policy that was implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic for academic years 2021-22 and 2022-23. That change was meant to alleviate hardships caused by the pandemic and harmful impacts to potential applicants.
“This decision aligns with the California State University’s continued efforts to level the playing field and provide greater access to a high-quality college degree for students from all backgrounds,” said Acting Chancellor Steve Relyea in a statement.
“In essence, we are eliminating our reliance on a high-stress, high-stakes test that has shown negligible benefit and providing our applicants with greater opportunities to demonstrate their drive, talents and potential for college success,” Relyea said.
Before suspending the use of the SAT and ACT test because of the pandemic, Cal State University officials had been discussing the role of standardized tests in undergraduate admissions.
Then a review a year ago found that the test provided very little value to the admissions process.
Two months ago, Cal State University’s Admission Advisory Council recommended ending the use of SAT and ACT tests in admissions decisions.
Cal State University considered other factors in Wednesday’s decision, including equity, fairness, academic preparation, and among other things, research on standardized testing.
Cal State University will use practices like the ones it used during the pandemic to make admission decisions, which includes taking several factors into consideration.

The dumbing down of America in action folks… lets just lower the bar of standards over and over lower and lower so low IQ people can feel special and get a participation trophy.
Great yet another way to mask that no one is being taught what they need to know in order to be able to hold down a job.
If you follow the program and study you should not be afraid of your test results.

I feel sorry for future graduates on their first big job interview. Congratulations, you have a college degree on your resume that illustrates you could fog the mirror in the proper color. What a disservice to these kids.
Here we go again with the lowering the standards. Any “Joe Blow”(even homeless stragglers!) can walk into an admissions office, apply and be admitted. Comprehension of English and ability to form a grammatically correct sentence is important.

Competition works…whether it is in business, politics, or whatever, competition keeps the bar high and spurs continual innovation for better performance. Unfortunately, that seems to no longer be a desired state for the education industry.
Years ago I had a friend who was a professor at the University of Washington. Aside from his other strange views was the idea to dumb down the education system to make the whole thing equal for minority students. Little by little these leftist views are becoming the law of the land. Why is that you ask? Because people who don’t have those views are busy working trying to make a living and to succeed. They don’t have the time or inclination to get into politics.
As a follow up. You may think asking the future SC justice the definition of a Woman was silly but it did what it was meant to do and that was to show the power of the woke. She either agrees with them or she didn’t want to shake their cage.
Follow the money. The colleges don’t care how many students drop out as long as they pay tuition. It won’t be long when a Bachler degree won’t mean anything to an employer. This is what the voters want. Mabey all the voters in this state graduated from college.
If you can’t do at least moderately well on the SATs, you shouldn’t be admitted to a university, period. Go to a community college and work your way up to it, that’s what they’re there for. Clown world…
I agree there should be some level of proficiency required. How is this being judged without a standardized test? If they don’t want to use these scores, then there should at least be a Pass/Fail test to demonstrate you are ready for a four year university.
Just imagine what “level playing field” Medicine and Rocket Science look like. We might as well surrender to the Communist Chinese now and skip the Ukraine-level destruction.
If you think some of the elected officials we have now aren’t up to the job, just wait until these kids graduate. Some of them will go into politics, but rest assured, all of them will vote.
I’m preparing to take the test for Rocket Surgeon, or Brain Scientist, I forget which one. The competition is already so low I expect to pass easily. Perhaps I’ll wait a year or two so I could be #1. Wouldn’t that look nice on my resume’.

There was already a way to get a bachelors without taking the SAT – community college then transfer to a cal state university.
It seems fair that if you don’t take the SAT that you need to work through a community college to transfer to the university instead of starting there if you took the SAT. That is fairness, not what these clowns with PHD’s are saying.

These tests have been shown to be a very good predictor of success or failure in College. Not grades but the ability to graduate.

We are not talking about Admissions, we are talking about the graduation rate. what good is it to admit a student you suspect will fail? Low test scores usually mean the student needs some “seasoning” most likely at a JC.
I predict that soon there will be no fail. They will further dumb down the process so everyone graduates no matter how poor their effort or performance,

Equalized mediocrity…the college graduates of tomorrow– equivalent to the high school graduates of the 1950s-60! California went from first to worst and compounded even more by the Covid policies to keep kids from in person learning.
Parents should watch the 2014 documentary film Ivory Tower and get a glimpse of high college tuition/loans and what that means to your family.
Will this lead to more kids flunking out of college, or will the curriculum be dummied-down so no kid gets left behind. Oh, this is the state where everyone gets a participation trophy. As an employer, I will soon discount the creditability of a CA college diploma.
When I going to high school in the early 80’s standardized tests were the one way to level the field between working class students and children of the elitists. Money can buy a lot of things to allow a rich kid to pad their qualifications on a college application. A standard test given to all applicants regardless of wealth or whether they went to public or private high school allowed bright working class kids to overcome all the advantages the rich kids had.
This will be a disaster. Standardized tests aren’t perfect but they provide a reasonable test of competence. Grades are so subjective and standards vary so much from school to school. E.g., I work for a private and so many of our transfer students from public schools coming in with mostly As and a few Bs struggle at my school. There is absolutely grade inflation at most California public schools. So the “solution” will be more and more colleges will have to offer high-school level curriculum because there are going to be many students admitted who are NOT prepared for a 4-year university, even if their transcript shows straight As!.
Well, if they dumb down the 4-year university program, that’ll result in California university classes being no better than post-high school classes – not even up to par with junior colleges.
A California university diploma these days is nothing more than a participation trophy. Glad I got my degrees decades ago and out of state.
If it causes homeless stragglers to further their education then I am all for it. They wouldn’t be homeless anymore. Seems like a brilliant fix to me.

It will be interesting to track the increase in drop-outs over the coming years. I’m all for giving people opportunities, but testing ensures that students are up to the challenge.
