During May’s Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, Concord Police Department reminds drivers to always look twice for motorcycles.
“Motorcycles may be difficult to spot, so being extra careful before changing lanes is always good practice,” Lt. Mark Robison said. “Motorcycle riders are out in the elements and do not have the same protections drivers and passengers do. Please share the road with motorcycles and drive safe.”
Throughout the month, Concord Police Department will be conducting Motorcycle Safety Enforcement.
To help protect you and your family, keep the following tips in mind while driving or riding:

- Always check mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes.
- Do not follow a motorcycle too closely. Always keep a safe distance.
- If you see a motorcycle with a signal on, be careful. Be sure that the rider is turning before moving ahead.
- Always wear a U.S. DOT-compliant helmet with eye protection.
- Wear leather or other sturdy clothing such as a jacket, pants, boots with nonskid soles and gloves. Add reflective strips or decals to your clothing and motorcycle to make it easier for other drivers to see you.
- Ride defensively. Don’t assume a driver can see you. Avoid riding in a driver’s blind spot.
- Always keep your lights on, even during the day.

Also, don’t fly by traffic doing 150 mph on your rice rocket and expect someone not to change lanes in front of you, when they checked their mirror and you were 1/4 mile behind them and 3 seconds later you are right on them.
As long as motorcyclists obey the rules of the road, there should be no serious issues with safety.
The concern is the irresponsible riders who behave like maniacs.
Speeding, unsafe lane splitting, passing recklessly, ignoring stop signs/lights, and other generally dangerous actions.
But, it’s not all on the motorcycles, irresponsible auto drivers are just as reckless and dangerous.
So what’s the answer?
Drive responsibly.

It’s them taking unnecessary risk. I drive legally and they can look out for themselves.
Tell this to the morons who split lanes at 65 – 75 mph on the (what used to be) freeways. They get upon you so fast you don’t have a chance to become aware of them.
… I’ve been run off the road and have had to lay it down 2x because of careless and irresponsible drivers… as much as I like riding on the street – no thanks…
I like cars & trucks. It’s alot harder to be run off the road & nearly impossible to fall off a car…. plus, there’s seat belts, heater, air conditioning, stereo, DVD player, cup holders…. where do you put your beer on a motorcycle?………
I mean in a car, you can put stuff on the seat or in the trunk.
I do my best to keep an eye out for them, but also some of the dumbest situations I find myself in. Move to the left to make room, but then there’s another coming up on the other side. If you don’t move over enough, then they pull up next to you and show their anger by revving their bikes. I saw this happen yesterday and the dude stops next to the car and starts yelling, “You wanna die n****?” Great group of people.
There’s no pleasing these guys.

Ummm how about you tell motorcyclists to not drive like d**ks and then flip you off if you don’t move over for them!
Every cop out there should be able to write an entire book of tickets every day with all the BS going on.
Lack of ticket writing just makes things worse.
I get no respect out there when driving or riding from 50% + of other drivers with those T-bag drivers taking over as some of the worse.
Did you know that all the pot holes are on the left and right sides of the lanes where motorcycles are supposed to be riding ?
Those that are paid to keep up the roads and highways are a total failure.
Weaving in and out of lanes riding my ass cut in between me and the car next to me when there’s barely any room at all yeah you don’t own the road I don’t think so
I try to just cruise along and not get to ticked off at motorcyclists that push the envelope. Kind of sad thinking that eventually their luck will run out. Similar to the reality that road rage crazy car driver will eventually meet “crazier”. Then someone dies. Chill out, live longer.
When I ride, I ride at a reasonable speed. We were taught, “If you cannot see thru it, or over it, go around it.” I see so many people on their phones and not paying attention to the roads. I split traffic to avoid the people not paying attention, and so I do not get crushed between 2 vehicles when someone doesn’t stop in time.

Not every motorcyclist rides crazy or acts like they “own” the road. Just look in those blind spots, use blinkers, look twice, and just be aware. One last thing we just don’t appear out of nowhere. We were there you just didn’t see us. Most importantly don’t be an ass when you see us and tighten the lane, ride our butts, etc.
