Police in Walnut Creek arrested a woman who they say tried steal $1,617.71 worth of items from Safeway in the Orchards shopping center on Ygnacio Valley Rd. at Oak Grove.

Earlier on Thursday, the store reported a female suspect leaving the store with multiple carts full of groceries that she didn’t purchase.

Police say Safeway recognized the female and said she has done this several times since November.

Officers were nearby and were able to stop the suspect and recover $1,617.71 worth of items, according to police.

The property was returned to Safeway and the suspect was arrested for grand theft and providing officers with a false identification.

The suspect’s name was not released.

So, we can only arrest this trash after they have done it several times??? Because this is not new. People steal from every Safeway, just like this, every single day.

Not so fast. She will be let out tomorrow, thanks for our soft DA, who is quite proud of it.

Well, our DA she would not prosecute people that were stealing out of need. So this woman was stealing out of need? I guess even to make payments on her Dodge Challenger in the picture… that would be okay?.. add to that, if she was a certain people group she would be allowed to do this under the title of equity.

It would be interesting to know what time this call came in, as I was there this afternoon. I observed a woman parked street level at the Ygnacio end of the parking lot. She seemed jumpy as if she was about to do something. Most people head in to shop; she looked like she was waiting for an opportunity. Perhaps there was more than one thief at the Orchards today.
They need better security, especially with a senior living complex right behind.

I dare you and your family to only live off of the little amounts of expired food you get from the food bank for a week. Then you can speak on that.
What this woman did was wrong and excessive yes. But a lot of us in the lower class community have had to think about that as a last resort.
I’m just saying it’s sad that people who work honest jobs, 40 hours a week can’t afford the basic necessities after bills are paid for.
I am so happy that you have been fortunate enough never to have to even think of making that choice.

Those shopping carts only lock up when they plunge into those godforsaken ditches all over that parking lot. Talk about an accident waiting to happen. That parking lot needs its own tow truck.

I actually had one lock up on me at the Clayton Safeway, after I paid of course…quite embarrassing! I was on my way out the door and decided to pivot to the lotto machine nearby when the cart locked up, guess it malfunctioned as I hadn’t exited via those metal bars.

Chris January 19, 2023 - 9:18 PM - 9:18 PM

If you open your eyes and see the items she took, these are all things a family can use and need. This isn’t just someone stealing to resell.. this is someone desperate and on hard times and trying to support a family. The real crime is what grocery stores are charging now. Please have a little Compassion for fellow humans who need help.

Experiencing hard times is justification to steal things from stores? Give me a break. People like you are a big part of the problem, these days.
p.s. in case you haven’t heard, California has extensive welfare and public assistance programs available to those in need.

Extensive welfare program?!?! I work an honest job a little over minimum wage 40 hours a week. Just had a baby. And I make too much for this extensive welfare program. When by the time my bills are paid, formula, diapers, and gas for my commute I have literally pennies left. BUT I MAKE TOO MUCH. Thank God I am fortunate enough to love with my parents and don’t pay rent. You don’t know what you’re talking about and should not be speaking on that.

I don’t know, she has a pretty nice looking car behind her! Maybe she needs to budget her money better. And why don’t people like you just give her an extra thousand a month out of your pay so she could buy her groceries if you feel so sorry? Her stealing causes me and my family to have to pay more for groceries, and we’re having a hard time too!

24
NOT BUYING IT January 20, 2023 - 7:08 AM - 7:08 AM

I don’t know her story, she definitely has a nice car and some of the items she stole wasn’t necessity, and it was excessive.
But 1600 for 2 carts should speak on the very real inflation problem and our horrible welfare system.
To all of you saying there is no necessity to steal, you’re ignorant and God forbid you are ever in a predicament of feeding your family and you’re living off food bank scraps, working your butt off to make just a little more that’s just gonna get taxed like crazy, and having to make the decision, whether your morals outweigh your kids have a full belly or not.

Safeway prices are way overpriced to make up for all the stealing. Every time I shop there I see people steal. I complained to the store and their corporate offices. They still do not have security. So I stopped shopping there.

That’s a lot of sugar drinks and frozen foods. Crazy that’s $1600 worth of crap but stealing like this raises the prices for everyone else. Hope she doesn’t have diabetes and stops stealing. Pretty soon anything over 5 dollars you’ll have to get at the counter.

My reply to all of the comments stating that this person didn’t steal with the intent to resell the items but stole to help out her family – there are other options! Spend the time and effort and research these options. Stealing is not ok! Also, I have never spent $1,600 shopping at Safeway or any other grocery store at one time. This person is part of a perpetual cycle – steal, company raises prices, steal etc

@ ALowClassHuman
Likely this criminal’s housing costs are also very high. The rich landlord should provide free rent. Likely the gas station that sells the gas this criminal needs also should provide free gas/the criminal should steal the gas at gunpoint. Likely the clothing this criminal needs to clothe its family should also be free. Best if those that support criminals give them free food, shelter, and clothing.

Like I said, there likely will never be a Red Wave. For each criminal there is a supporter.

Look at those carts closely. There are a few grocery items, and a little shrimp and meat, but there appears to also be some high value non grocery items too. this is not stealing to feed a family.

WC---Creeker January 20, 2023 - 9:21 AM - 9:21 AM

Soon all the retail stores will close as they are losing so much money. You’ll have to buy everything online where it will be delivered to your house in an armored type vehicle with armed guards riding inside. The thieves will come steal from your porch/apartment mail area. At that point it’s your problem no the retail companies.

Greg January 20, 2023 - 10:03 AM - 10:03 AM

I guess inflation is really a thing if those two carts are holding $1,617.71 worth of merchandise..

I hope she spends time and tells all the people that buy her stuff they have to shop like the rest of us, or you will go to jail too. I don’t agree that the stores have enough profit margjn to just give millions of $ to thieves and donate the rest to the food banks. They pass the costs on to the ones who pay…
Its time our justice system sends a message.
Alot of the crime and shoplifting is not due to poverty. Alot of it is drugs ‘meth and fentanyl’ and people who don’t care and have no accountability. Our government and politicians can’t save us from this.

We can’t see everything in the carts so you are making a huge assumption that it’s all necessary food to feed a family. If you look closely you can see a stuff animal, candle etc. Stealing no matter what is not acceptable. Most people are going thru hard times. Imagine if everyone was stealing.

I know it isn’t right to do this and i don’t condone it in anyway, but SNAP benefits need to change. People can barely afford to live here, furthermore move out. Whatever their personal reasoning is to be here. California is so expensive and food is off the chart. I can only imagine this woman having so much money and wanting to feed her family. Snap benefits make it so that people don’t want to work. She could possibly be a single woman with no children and that let alone gives you barely any benefits. All these people who work so hard to feed their family or go to school almost never qualify. It’s a messed up system and I hope she finds some assistance in the near future and take advantage of what she can find locally. Therefor she won’t need to deal with having a record on your profile which will also stop her from finding a job, and even possibly receiving any assistance. I pray for you girl, i’m not one to judge because I’m not perfect nor am I god but if you ever read this please continue to pray and look for what resources are out here in coco county that can help you feed yourself or your family… don’t give up.
