The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) recognizes the importance of Alcohol Awareness Month every April due to the high number of alcohol-related deaths each year in the U.S.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, over 140,000 people die each year from excessive alcohol use. In 2020, 11,654 people died in alcohol-related car crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
“Raising awareness is important in preventing alcohol-related deaths and traffic crashes,” said ABC Director Eric Hirata. “Alcohol Awareness Month is an opportunity to talk about the dangers of alcohol misuse and promote safety on our roads.”
ABC regulates the sale, manufacture, and distribution of alcohol in California. This month the department will continue enforcing alcoholic beverage laws and providing education. ABC recognizes the serious health and public safety concerns surrounding alcohol, especially when it is misused.
The effects of alcohol misuse are both deadly and expensive. Alcohol is the fourth-leading cause of preventable death in the United States, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAA), and about 18.5% of all emergency room visits involve alcohol.
The financial burden of alcohol misuse cost the U.S. an estimated $249 billion in 2010. NHTSA estimates that drunk driving crashes cost the U.S. $44 billion annually.

I’ll drink to that! Cheers!

With Uber, Lyft, and Taxis, there’s no excuse to drink and drive. Get a clue.
If the government actually cared they’d make those services free for all intoxicated people. All the time.
Instead they make stuff free for people who don’t contribute to anything.
The “hand-wringing” and “woe is me” people support and scream about gun tragedies but yet there are some 10K+ killed on the nations roadways due to auto crashes!! Now they are using data based on drunk driving. How about inclusion of drug affected behavior?? The world will never be free of illegal access of guns or drugs! Legalization of cannabis is an idiotic move!
WAKE UP, you Utopians!!
You don’t need to smoke pot. Just get behind the right car on Highway 24.
Since Opioid manufacturers are sued by the states, then why aren’t the alcohol manufacturers also sued? Alcohol abuse destroys so many lives and families.
Someone forward this to the Mayor’s office, thanks.
“Leave your blood at the blood bank ….. not on the highway” Anyone out there remember who said that???

Cpl. Frank Poncharello?
.
Broderick Crawford?
Broderick Crawford said that at the end of every half hour TV show “Highway Patrol” in the late 50’s.
Ironically Broderick was a raging Alcoholic who in fact had lost his drivers license over it. The old episodes are all on you tube now. A young William Boyett, later of Adam 12 fame co-starred in several episodes. Great show.
If deaths are blamed on alcohol, can we also argue that it causes pregnancy?
Beer goggles.
R.I.P to innocent life’s. Driveig under the influence minimum 6 months of jail!
Alcohol is a powerful remover of jobs, doors, walls, chairs, vehicles, marriages, relationships, a person’s freedom, life, etc
Alcohol has nothing to do with it. Bad people make bad choices, and if you let a substance control you, then you are a bad person.
Anyone who drinks and drives deserves the death penalty. These are horrible, selfish people.
EVERY MONTH should be alcohol awareness month. Why just one month? Besides, this does not apply to politicians and the drunkards in city counsel like Laura Brewmeister who was bought, paid for, and pardoned by DA Becton.
