A 26-year-old man working as a Home Depot security guard in Pleasanton died after being shot by an alleged shoplifter at the store Tuesday, police said.
The guard, identified by Pleasanton police as Tri-Valley resident and Eagle Scout Blake Mohs, died following the shooting that occurred around 2:15 p.m. at the store at 6000 Johnson Drive.
Police said Mohs confronted the alleged shoplifter, a 32-year-old woman named Benicia Knapps who resisted and shot him.
Knapps then ran to a getaway vehicle driven by David Guillory, 31, that also had Knapp’s child inside. About 15 minutes later, Knapps and Guillory were located and detained by Alameda County sheriff’s deputies, and the child was released to relatives.
Pleasanton Mayor Karla Brown issued a statement Wednesday about the fatal shooting of Mohs, who was involved in community youth programs and planned to get married this summer.
“I am devastated by the loss of Blake Mohs in yesterday’s senseless shooting. Through his service to Tri-Valley organizations, Blake was a model for others. To have a life cut short is heartbreaking and infuriating. I’m joined by the City Council in offering our deepest condolences to Blake’s family, friends, loved ones, and to everyone impacted by this tragedy,” Brown said in the statement.
A Home Depot spokesperson said, “We’re heartbroken over this senseless tragedy. Blake was our associate and friend, and our hearts go out to his family and everyone who knew and loved him.”

The level of violence is starting to turn the corner. Smash and grabs led to significant financial loss, but, as best I can tell, homicidal outcomes have been at a minimum. Many more law abiding citizens, such as this 26 year-old man, will continue to die, unfortunately, because the law has strayed from calling out bad behavior. Another continuous tragedy 😢 in which a productive member in our society is killed by a useless thug over something so minor. This suspect shows the kind of evil in her to do something so vile. I’d love to see both of their arrest records. I’m sure Pamela Price will work out a plea deal in which the murderer will be out in a few years.
