More Police On BART Leads To Increase In Arrests

BART officials said a larger police presence has led to two of its highest monthly arrest totals since the pandemic began.

BART recorded 258 arrests in March and 266 in April systemwide, according to an announcement from the transit agency.

On March 20, BART doubled the number of sworn officers riding on trains in the core of the system, agency officials said.

Funniest thing, the concept of more police=more arrests. Now we need to get the DA to prosecute.
Thanks to the gullible liberal voters, that probably won’t happen.

Get the non-paying riders out of the system, it will improve overnight. Did any of those arrested buy a ticket?

Who is monitoring the accuracy of these numbers and the effectiveness of the additional arrests? Over time, the public will need to have unbiased info on this. Are the arrests actually helping with the safety and cleanliness issues surrounding riding BART? Has BART improved the on time performance of its trains with these arrests or any other available measures? Because BART is going to ask for a bunch more taxpayer money on the ballot next election. We need to see real results and not manipulated statistics before then, or everyone should absolutely vote no on handing over extra funds.

Hate to shatter your bubble but California Penal Code § 853.6 (a) (1) requires that a person arrested for a misdemeanor be cite released. There are exceptions but the overwhelming majority of misdemeanor arrests, even if booked into county jail, are released on a promise to appear.

It has been the law of the land in California for over 5 decades.

Amazing, Astounding,
wonder who came up with the idea of Police on trains.
.
If there is no threat of incarceration,
there is no deterrence to criminal behavior

I am so entirely grateful for the men and women in uniform who risk their lives for a selfless job such as arresting these losers on Bart and away from Bart. Unfortunately their hard and dangerous work means nothing if the perps are out before their shift ends. Justice system needs to change before their arrests are considered helpful. Otherwise the public only feels sorrow for the arresting officer and not very optimistic that their work matters. Again I support the police but also feel bad for them and hopeless for my self and family.

That demonstrates just how badly an increased presence was required.

Just goes to show all the illegal and arrestable stuff that is happening on BART trains – Before they were just letting it happen.

too little too late, I’m afraid. Coming from a guy who rides BART in to SF at least 3 days a week.

Good show, but the question remains, will any of them be prosecuted and actually do jail time?

Surprise surprise. Policing actual works. Good start. I actually have seen more Officers in the past month than I have in well over a decade of daily riding.

That’s how it’s supposed to work. Imagine how many people should have been arrested and were not due to no police presence.

You have a couple years of this to prove it as you’ve been negligent for at least a decade….. now target fare evaders, follow-up on complaints in a timely manner on BART parking lot thefts, accidents, etc. … we’ll be watching.

That’s Interesting

Buddy May 30, 2023 - 3:59 PM - 3:59 PM

So that’s interesting, highest two month period since the “pandemic”
So prior to the “pandemic” they were arresting more than 200 per month? I don’t think so.

WokeCertified May 31, 2023 - 9:43 AM - 9:43 AM

It’s just a matter of time before some UC professor does a disparate impact study and determines that these increased arrests are having a greater impact on some “oppressed” group, and that will put an end to this progress. Then everything will return to the normal dystopian hell scape that is BART.
