ConFire is rescuing a young snake bite victim from the Mitchell Canyon area of Mt. Diablo State Park in Clayton.
The victim will be transported to John Muir Walnut Creek, where they’ve confirmed they have anti-venom ready.
A helicopter is in route to transport the victim.
Who’s young the snake or the bite victim?
I ran across a rattlesnake while walking the Mitchell Canyon Trail. I Just stayed clear of it as it slithered across the trail down into the creek bed. Since it was stretched out and moving I knew I was fairly safe to just stand still. But if they’re coiled up watch out! That’s when they could strike out at you. I trust the victim will be okay.
Hope the victim has insurance $ 5000.00 for a helicopter ride.
Try $15k. Out of network, too.
Hope he / she will be ok… anxiety was probably very high pumping that venom quickly through their body
Any update on the young snake bite victim? I’m sure this was frightening for them. I hope they are ok.
Please pray for that little boy and his family. This is very serious and scary.
Child being taken to the Copter isn’t easy to see. He’s In good hands. Best to the little boy, his Mother and family..
As a child, I was told to stick to the trails and listen for the rattle. Watching for wildlife is part of the experience. A child must have these skills before allowing them to hike without a parental guide. Pretty sure I was older than seven. Also, I took the dogs. None of us suffered snake bites.
My best to the boy and family.
Me too. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve told someone with kids or pets “Hey, you know there are Rattlesnakes in the grass yah?” all while they’re just carelessly throwing the ball into the tall grass, or watching their kids run and jump a few feet off the trail in the grass. They look bewildered and confused 90% of the time. I have a video on YouTube with two young girls running on the main vehicle trail, and thankfully I yelled “STOP” before they stepped on it. Educate your friends that use the spaces, it’s the local wildlifes home, not ours.
Things like this, while unfortunate, will also spread awareness that “Open Space” does not mean “City Park”.
I agree snake guy. Part of the excitement and education of trekking is observation. Snakes, birds, lizards. Plants, flowers, trees. The wilderness is not a controlled environment! You won’t see the skunks and Bobcats if you are shrieking and trampling the wildflowers.
Praying for this little boy, and his family. What a tragic way to end a family hike. Have taken my boys out many times to all the beautiful trails around ClayCord and always careful when doing so. Snakes will leave us alone if we leave them alone, but sometimes young snakes attack for no apparent reason.
I distinctly remember my youngest son running down a trail, fast a lightning, and he jumped over a snake; turned out to be a baby rattler, but it was not bothered by his approach. I was very frightened when I realized what was happening. Luckily, it was a teachable moment for us, and we always carried a hiking pole going forward, to make sure Mom or Dad was in the lead, and if anything alongside the trail looked suspicious, we would give it a wide berth, so as to avoid getting bit.
Take care little guy and get well very soon!
.
What? No cornsnake joke?
.
I’m disappointed.
.
That will be one expensive lesson!
Not necessarily. I have done mercy airlifts with no incurred charges to the patient off hiking trails. While most have insurance coverage some do not.
Not all emergency rescues come with a bill.
I’m surprised this doesn’t happen once a month in the summer.
sure wish the parents would ask the hospital to give an update; they can stay anonymous..
Don’t know if the parents are aware of the well wishes out here….
I’m friends with the family. The boy is still in the hospital but expected to be released on Friday.
They better bill the parents for all the extra public safety response and medical helicopter that were involved in this. Massive response to this incident.
They should bill the rattlesnake’s parents.
