They are pretty much confined within the Mote’s area. They want out and many of the humans are willing to help them. But there are questions about their cycles of wars and the causes. Same guy who sang the famous “Convoy” sang “Wolf Creek Pass”. The story is hilarious……(listen to it. It’s worth it)

Me an’ Earl was haulin’ chickens
On a flatbed out of Wiggins
And we’d spent all night on the uphill side
Of 37 miles of hell
Called Wolf Creek Pass
Which is up on the Great Divide
We was settin’ there suckin’ toothpicks
An’ drinkin’ Nehis and onion soup mix
And I says, “Earl, let’s mail a card to mother
And then send them chickens on down to the other side
Yeah, let’s give ’em a ride”
Wolf Creek Pass, way up on the Great Divide
Truckin’ on down the other side
Well, Earl put down his bottle
Mashed his foot down on the throttle
And then a couple’a boobs
With a thousand cubes
In a 1948 Peterbilt screamed to life
We woke up the chickens
We roared up offa that shoulder
Sprayin’ pine cones, rocks, and boulders
And put four hundred head
Of them Rhode Island Reds
And a couple a’ burnt-out roosters on the line
Look out below
‘Cause here we go
Wolf Creek Pass, way up on the Great Divide
Truckin’ on down the other side
Well, we commenced a-truckin’
And them hens commenced a-cluckin’
And then Earl took out a match
And scratched his pants
And lit up the unused half of a dollar cigar and took a puff
Says “My, ain’t this pretty up here”
I says, “Earl, this hill can spill us
You better slow down or you gonna kill us
Just make one mistake
And it’s the pearly gates
For them 85 crates
Of USDA-approved cluckers
You wanna hit second?”
Wolf Creek Pass, way up on the Great Divide
Truckin’ on down the other side
Well, Earl grabbed on the shifter
And he stabbed her into fifth gear
And then the chromium plated
Fully illuminated
Genuine accessory shift knob
Come right off in his hand
I says, “You wanna screw that thing back on, Earl?”
He was tryin’ to thread it on there
When the fire fell off a’ his cigar
And dropped on down
Sorta rolled around
And then lit in the cuff of Earl’s pants
And burned a hole in his sock
Yeah, sorta set him right on fire
I looked on outta the window
And I started countin’ phone poles
Goin’ by at the rate of four to the seventh power
Well I put two and two together
And added 12 and carried five
And come up with 22 thousand
Telephone poles an hour
I looked at Earl and his eyes was wide
His lip was curled, and his leg was fried
And his hand was froze to the wheel
Like a tongue to a sled in the middle of a blizzard
I says, Earl, “I’m not the type to complain
But the time has come for me to explain
That if you don’t apply some brake real soon
They’re gonna have to pick us up
With a stick and a spoon”
Well, Earl reared back
And cocked his leg
Stepped down as hard as he could on the brake
And the pedal went clear to the floor
And stayed right there on the floor
And he says it was sorta like steppin’ on a plum
Well, from there on down
It just wasn’t real pretty
It was hairpin county
And switchback city
One of ’em looked like a can full’a worms
Another one looked like malaria germs
Right in the middle of the whole damn show
Was a real nice tunnel
Now wouldn’t you know
Sign says clearance to the 12-foot line
But the chickens was stacked to 13-nine
Well we shot that tunnel at a hundred-and-ten
Like gas through a funnel and eggs through a hen
We took that top row of chickens off
Slicker than scum off a Louisiana swamp
Went down and around and around and down
We run outta ground at the edge of town
Bashed into the side of a feed store
In downtown Pagosa Springs
Wolf Creek Pass, way up on the Great Divide
Truckin’ on down the other side
Wolf Creek Pass, way up on the Great Divide
Truckin’ on down the other side

Most people are surprised to learn the music for this song was written by Chip Davis of Mannheim Steamroller fame.

Paranoid pablito June 24, 2023 - 4:17 PM - 4:17 PM

I am surprised to learn that! Thanks

Ancient Mariner June 24, 2023 - 8:29 PM - 8:29 PM

Well, Paranoid Pablito, I really enjoyed that – thanks!

S June 23, 2023 - 10:11 PM - 10:11 PM

Pick One:
A) Over Easy
B) Sunny Side Up
C) Yuck

Hanne Jeppesen June 24, 2023 - 12:46 AM - 12:46 AM

Over easy. I love eggs, scrambled eggs with chives, or mushroom, aspergus omelet with aspargus and goat cheese. A Danisn open faced sandwich on rye bread, with mayo sliced hard boiled eggs and tomatoes, add salt and fresh grounded pepper. Sometime I make it Californian and add avocado. Also an open sandwich on rye bread, mayo, hard boiled sliced eggs, topped with tiny shrimp, mayo and fresh dill.

Dawg June 24, 2023 - 1:39 AM - 1:39 AM

B) Sunny side up. I love the taste of soft egg yolks.

Jeff (the other one) June 24, 2023 - 6:29 AM - 6:29 AM

Yes to both…any style is good eating.

Simonpure June 24, 2023 - 7:47 AM - 7:47 AM

Over medium well for me S. Cant stand an egg when the whites are not completely cooked. Like a little yellow to dip bread into though. My loved one eats them practically raw. Like poached. Gross!!! I think they call it Benedict or something like that.

Cowellian June 24, 2023 - 9:06 AM - 9:06 AM

I love over-medium eggs, with the whites solid and the yolk still runny. I’ve discovered the Waffle House hashbrown bowls with over-medium eggs instead of scrambled. That way, the hashbrowns soak up all the wonderful yolk.

When I’m making breakfast burritos, I start by frying the eggs, and I don’t break the yolks until the whites have already set up.

Well Folks June 24, 2023 - 9:45 AM - 9:45 AM

Scrambled hard. slightly golden and bouncy. Add herb feta, mushrooms and chopped fresh spinach and it is perfection.

Captain Bebops June 24, 2023 - 10:42 AM - 10:42 AM

A) Though I like sunny side up too but it takes an extra dish to wash. 😄

S June 24, 2023 - 4:14 PM - 4:14 PM
Like to mush them up in my grits; or hash browns as well….

Hanne Jeppesen June 23, 2023 - 10:42 PM - 10:42 PM

I like most people have followed the news and tragedy of the Titan, 5 people were killed. I realize it was a risky trip and according to the news so did those passengers. Never the less it is 5 lives lost, and reading the comments on Yahoo I’m dismayed how many mean spirited people there are, and ignorant as well. Some commented that greed got them killed, that makes no sense, some paid a hefty price for the adventure, but they had the money, nothing to do with greed. Others seem to thing because they were wealthy they deserved their fate, calling them useless. How ignorant can people be, many are wealthy because they worked hard, took risks etc. Sure some might have inheirited their wealth, but that does not make them bad people. Besided many wealthy people do a lot of good with their money.

Dawg June 24, 2023 - 1:36 AM - 1:36 AM

Hanne, Throughout history there have been men and women that took risks exploring the unknown, and some of them died along the way. Magellan, Henry Hudson, Amelia Earhart, and Captain Cook, to name a few, all died taking a risk. Exploring the unknown brings us new information in geography, space, medicine, and much more. It helps in developing an understanding of the universe, and the world in which we live, and to grow psychologically.
Ignore the trolls on the internet, calling them ignorant is too nice, they are beyond ignorant, they are stupid and arrogant. Arrogance leaves little room for growth, whereas ignorance, if we are smart enough to recognize and admit it, provides an incentive for growth, and for the pursuit of knowledge.

Hanne Jeppesen June 24, 2023 - 12:01 PM - 12:01 PM

Dawg, I agree. I’m very familiar with stories of many explores, especially Amlia Earhardt, read much about her, she was way ahead of her time, didn’t believe in being monagamous. Also the story of Beryl Markman “West with the wind, she is not as well know as Amelia, but her story is fascinating. She lived in Africa and knew the Danish writer Isak Dinesen (real name Karen Blixen) might even have and an affair with Karen;s lover the dashing hunter Denys Finch Hatton, the movie Out of Africa is based on Blixen;s life. Her birthplace is a museum north of Copenhagen, that I have visited. Also very familiar with the story of Norwegian explorers Roald Amundsen and Thor Heyerdahl. All these stories are fascinating and I’m all for people pushing the bounderies. I don’t think anything in my post comes of as being critical, however listening to several experts in underwater exploration, James Cameron for one, seems the owner took some unnessecary risks. However, that was not really the point of my post. Yes, I agree many of the comments on the internet is beyond ignorant, and replying to them is probably pointless. I just can’t believe how heartless some people are, however what surprised was how many have such blatant hositilty towards wealthy people. Besides that I’m not sure everyone that died on the Titan were wealthy,, one was a French explorer. The owner Stockton Rush was married to a great, great granddaugher (I think perhaps 3 greats) of one of the founder of Macy’s, who went down with the Titanic along with his wife. He was offered a lifeboat, but declined, his wife was offered a seat as well, she choose to stay with her husband. I think they made sure their maid got a seat.

Simonpure June 24, 2023 - 7:42 AM - 7:42 AM

Indeed very sad. The only plus is the died in a fraction of a second. No pain or suffering like what would have occurred with slow loss of oxygen. I feel for their loved ones.

Juryisout June 24, 2023 - 9:55 AM - 9:55 AM

They sure the hell knew what was happening, that mini would have been making all sorts of noises warning them what was about to happen it was not instant they knew their death was coming.

Hanne Jeppesen June 24, 2023 - 12:03 PM - 12:03 PM

From listening to several experts I’m not sure that is correct. However, even if you are correct they did die instantly and did not suffer.

The Fearless Spectator June 24, 2023 - 10:14 AM - 10:14 AM

Agreed. Life is a series of choices, and the choices of others are none of our business as long as they don’t impinge on our lives.

To Do List June 24, 2023 - 2:25 PM - 2:25 PM

What a bunch of baloney, comparing those Titan clowns to Magellan and Captain Cook. There was nothing to explore or monumental goals to achieve other than being the rare guy at the resort bragging he saw the Titanic in person. These guys were engaged in death voyeurism. They took ridiculously dangerous chances and got nailed for it. The government of Canada is opening a criminal investigation into the incompetence and stupidity of these people. The organizers were looking for money, and the passengers for fame and to them this was a rich man’s version of Disneyland. They are not to be admired. And yes, it may have been their business, but I certainly have a right to my opinion and the resources sucked up to try to bail them out.

Juryisout June 24, 2023 - 4:22 PM - 4:22 PM

You nailed it..
You however left out many are saying they are that’s just the stupidest I’ve heard yet.

Hanne Jeppesen June 25, 2023 - 8:17 AM - 8:17 AM

To do list, I don’t necessarily think Dawg was comparing Stockton Rush (the owner and founder) to well known explorers. Dawg was saying he was pushing bounderies, which explorers always do, and taking risks. I think you are a little hard on the passengers, many have wanted and have gone down to see the Titanic, James Cameron, the director for one. However, it seems that Stockton Rush took some uneccessary risks, and paid for it with his life, as did his passengers. I do agree they are not heroes, it is never the less a sad story, especially for the family left behind.

Captain Bebops June 24, 2023 - 9:28 AM - 9:28 AM

Joe Bob Brigg’s “The Last Driven-In” episode (Shudder/AMC+) last night has a local connection. They were celebrating the 10th anniversary of the movie “Sharknado” by showing the film and interviewing Anthony C. Ferrante who was born in Martinez and the family later moved to Antioch. I rented his first movie “Boo!” back in 2005 and also watched the movie with commentary where he mentions growing up in Martinez.

Superlotto has not been won in months and yet the jackpot only grows by 1 million per game. the jackpot is now 71 million. yet ticket sales are through the roof. as the state lottery picks numbers through a random computer that already has all the combinations played. are we supposed to trust the number picking process they use. hey Claycord you should drum up a article for this farce.

Original G June 25, 2023 - 1:14 PM - 1:14 PM

lotto is nothing more than a tax on the statistically illiterate.
Two people same age 18, one puts $2,000 per year into 401k for six years and then stops.
Second person begins putting $2,000 per year into 401k on the seventh year and continues putting $2,000 every year until retirement at 65.
Both 401k accounts grow at same % with compound interest, at age 65 both end up with very similar amounts due to compounding. First one only put in $12,000
Two types of golden retirements one is worry free, other one is under a pair of golden arches asking “ya wanna supersize those fries?” Your choice.
Educate the kids, retirement is something they don’t want to screw up.

Salty here.. maybe im just too old to understand the craziness in this world. But shouldn’t everyone just let parents raise their children wo all the outside interferences? Let kids be kids and discover their own way. Don’t need schools or government to get involved in children’s development.

Maybe im too damn old

Mr. Pirate: you are making the mistake of believing everyone shares your basic values. I lived in SF for a while and many there are shockingly childish, mean spirited and petty. One time some news came out about some US soldiers who had been killed in the Mideast, and I saw a middle aged couple giggling, celebrating and dancing in the street at that news.

@To do. Explain to me how its in the best interest for schools, government etc can interfere in raising children. I dont get your reasoning. And I was raised in SF so u do NOT need to educate me on my home town!

To reply to people being giddy and celebrating death of service members…. Thats just plain DISGUSTING and people that act like that are horrible excuses of a human being!

Have a nice evening.

To Do List June 26, 2023 - 10:14 PM - 10:14 PM

Mr. Pirate: If a special interest group with long term goals wants to change society, taking over schools and teaching the kids a new set of values is very effective. Teachers now have very different values than many parents, and the math and English scores are rapidly falling as they teach their politics to the kids instead. I also have moved up and down the state over long periods, and the San Francisco of today is very different from what it was when I first worked there.
