Book report: The Mote in God’s Eye, Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle, 1974. The mote is a star in dark space called the Coal Sack where no other stars are seen. Human have spread out to a lot of other stars but still have human problems to contend with. Those of inferred but not detailed. What this is about is First Contact with an alien species. They are pretty much confined within the Mote’s area. They want out and many of the humans are willing to help them. But there are questions about their cycles of wars and the causes. Why are they split into controlled and genetic groups? Masters, Mediators, Watchmakers, Farmers, some others, and one not mentioned or admitted to. 560 pages of intense reading. Enjoy.

Over easy. I love eggs, scrambled eggs with chives, or mushroom, aspergus omelet with aspargus and goat cheese. A Danisn open faced sandwich on rye bread, with mayo sliced hard boiled eggs and tomatoes, add salt and fresh grounded pepper. Sometime I make it Californian and add avocado. Also an open sandwich on rye bread, mayo, hard boiled sliced eggs, topped with tiny shrimp, mayo and fresh dill.
B) Sunny side up. I love the taste of soft egg yolks.
Yes to both…any style is good eating.
Over medium well for me S. Cant stand an egg when the whites are not completely cooked. Like a little yellow to dip bread into though. My loved one eats them practically raw. Like poached. Gross!!! I think they call it Benedict or something like that.
I love over-medium eggs, with the whites solid and the yolk still runny. I’ve discovered the Waffle House hashbrown bowls with over-medium eggs instead of scrambled. That way, the hashbrowns soak up all the wonderful yolk.
When I’m making breakfast burritos, I start by frying the eggs, and I don’t break the yolks until the whites have already set up.
Scrambled hard. slightly golden and bouncy. Add herb feta, mushrooms and chopped fresh spinach and it is perfection.
A) Though I like sunny side up too but it takes an extra dish to wash. 😄

I like most people have followed the news and tragedy of the Titan, 5 people were killed. I realize it was a risky trip and according to the news so did those passengers. Never the less it is 5 lives lost, and reading the comments on Yahoo I’m dismayed how many mean spirited people there are, and ignorant as well. Some commented that greed got them killed, that makes no sense, some paid a hefty price for the adventure, but they had the money, nothing to do with greed. Others seem to thing because they were wealthy they deserved their fate, calling them useless. How ignorant can people be, many are wealthy because they worked hard, took risks etc. Sure some might have inheirited their wealth, but that does not make them bad people. Besided many wealthy people do a lot of good with their money.
Hanne, Throughout history there have been men and women that took risks exploring the unknown, and some of them died along the way. Magellan, Henry Hudson, Amelia Earhart, and Captain Cook, to name a few, all died taking a risk. Exploring the unknown brings us new information in geography, space, medicine, and much more. It helps in developing an understanding of the universe, and the world in which we live, and to grow psychologically.
Ignore the trolls on the internet, calling them ignorant is too nice, they are beyond ignorant, they are stupid and arrogant. Arrogance leaves little room for growth, whereas ignorance, if we are smart enough to recognize and admit it, provides an incentive for growth, and for the pursuit of knowledge.
Dawg, I agree. I’m very familiar with stories of many explores, especially Amlia Earhardt, read much about her, she was way ahead of her time, didn’t believe in being monagamous. Also the story of Beryl Markman “West with the wind, she is not as well know as Amelia, but her story is fascinating. She lived in Africa and knew the Danish writer Isak Dinesen (real name Karen Blixen) might even have and an affair with Karen;s lover the dashing hunter Denys Finch Hatton, the movie Out of Africa is based on Blixen;s life. Her birthplace is a museum north of Copenhagen, that I have visited. Also very familiar with the story of Norwegian explorers Roald Amundsen and Thor Heyerdahl. All these stories are fascinating and I’m all for people pushing the bounderies. I don’t think anything in my post comes of as being critical, however listening to several experts in underwater exploration, James Cameron for one, seems the owner took some unnessecary risks. However, that was not really the point of my post. Yes, I agree many of the comments on the internet is beyond ignorant, and replying to them is probably pointless. I just can’t believe how heartless some people are, however what surprised was how many have such blatant hositilty towards wealthy people. Besides that I’m not sure everyone that died on the Titan were wealthy,, one was a French explorer. The owner Stockton Rush was married to a great, great granddaugher (I think perhaps 3 greats) of one of the founder of Macy’s, who went down with the Titanic along with his wife. He was offered a lifeboat, but declined, his wife was offered a seat as well, she choose to stay with her husband. I think they made sure their maid got a seat.
Indeed very sad. The only plus is the died in a fraction of a second. No pain or suffering like what would have occurred with slow loss of oxygen. I feel for their loved ones.

From listening to several experts I’m not sure that is correct. However, even if you are correct they did die instantly and did not suffer.

What a bunch of baloney, comparing those Titan clowns to Magellan and Captain Cook. There was nothing to explore or monumental goals to achieve other than being the rare guy at the resort bragging he saw the Titanic in person. These guys were engaged in death voyeurism. They took ridiculously dangerous chances and got nailed for it. The government of Canada is opening a criminal investigation into the incompetence and stupidity of these people. The organizers were looking for money, and the passengers for fame and to them this was a rich man’s version of Disneyland. They are not to be admired. And yes, it may have been their business, but I certainly have a right to my opinion and the resources sucked up to try to bail them out.

To do list, I don’t necessarily think Dawg was comparing Stockton Rush (the owner and founder) to well known explorers. Dawg was saying he was pushing bounderies, which explorers always do, and taking risks. I think you are a little hard on the passengers, many have wanted and have gone down to see the Titanic, James Cameron, the director for one. However, it seems that Stockton Rush took some uneccessary risks, and paid for it with his life, as did his passengers. I do agree they are not heroes, it is never the less a sad story, especially for the family left behind.
Joe Bob Brigg’s “The Last Driven-In” episode (Shudder/AMC+) last night has a local connection. They were celebrating the 10th anniversary of the movie “Sharknado” by showing the film and interviewing Anthony C. Ferrante who was born in Martinez and the family later moved to Antioch. I rented his first movie “Boo!” back in 2005 and also watched the movie with commentary where he mentions growing up in Martinez.
The Red Devils Classic had their 25th annual golf tournament at Diablo Creek Golf Course. Alumni from Mt. Diablo High School were out golfing their hearts out. With lots of old friends, food, drinks, raffles and prizes everyone had a great time. Can’t wait for the 26th annual golf tournament.

For months now, a young man has been selling bouquets of flowers at the off ramp of 242 & Concord Ave. I’ve never bought one, but I’m curious….does anyone know how much he charges for them?

Mr. Pirate: you are making the mistake of believing everyone shares your basic values. I lived in SF for a while and many there are shockingly childish, mean spirited and petty. One time some news came out about some US soldiers who had been killed in the Mideast, and I saw a middle aged couple giggling, celebrating and dancing in the street at that news.
Anyone know why it’s taking so long for the Dutch Bros coffee to be built on Clayton Road?
…or any news about Nation’s? It was supposed to reopen in June. I haven’t heard of any updates.

Mr. Pirate: If a special interest group with long term goals wants to change society, taking over schools and teaching the kids a new set of values is very effective. Teachers now have very different values than many parents, and the math and English scores are rapidly falling as they teach their politics to the kids instead. I also have moved up and down the state over long periods, and the San Francisco of today is very different from what it was when I first worked there.
