Book report: Destination: Void, Frank Herbert, 1966 & 1978. Right off Herbert says this is completely revised edition of the original written in 1966. While I have greatly enjoyed his Dune stories this no on par with them. I could not even finish it. It is rare for me to give up before the end of a story. As a Sci Fi story it falls short. There seems to be too much of the “which-ness of why.” What is intelligence? What is god and what does god have to do with it? Sorry, I could not get past the 6th chapter and do not recommend it.

Thanks for the heads-up, Dorothy!
I was a big fan of Frank Herbert years ago (no time to read, now, unfortunately).
I did like “The Dragon in the Sea” and “The Santaroga Barrier” (and, of course the “Dune” series), but I’ve never heard of “Destination: Void”. I’ll a-VOID it. Sorry – couldn’t help myself there.
I found it odd that Herbert’s works were about the effects of drugs (jaspers in “The SRB”, melange in “Dune”).

A topic: Who here has been censored by the mayor? No doubt he has soverine rights, but I am curious. Profanity I understand , but edginess and humor are a matter requiring the most discerning judgement. 😛 Some rude comments I would like to read 😁 Maybe some I understand why he censored.

I think the mayor does a pretty decent job and this is a great site allowing a wide range of discussion not a polarized one. More of this kind of site is needed around the country or world. This could be a real albatross to run but I think they have some help so they can take a well deserved break now and then.

After driving through Concord today, I am now ready to issue an official statement: “Concord now has the worst timing/operation of traffic lights in Central/East Contra Costa.”

I’ve always said Concord’s city motto is “One block at a time”. Concord’s traffic engineers graduated at the bottom of their class 🤪

@Chris
You just arrived, and we just left, after 3 delightful nights in Carmel, and before that, 2 nights in Santa Cruz. Took a little side trip to see Clint Eastwood’s hotel/restaurant, The Mission Inn, but they were closed until later that evening. Lovely location, but very out of the way. Our 5 nights were all FREE, courtesy of points earned from my credit cards. And those 5 nights also included free, hot breakfasts.

S July 15, 2023 - 6:44 AM - 6:44 AM

Pick One:
.
A) Rice Pudding
B) Tapioca Pudding
C) YUCK

California Toad July 15, 2023 - 9:23 AM - 9:23 AM

Love both A and B – also plain, homemade vanilla pudding. All are great with some fresh berries, too.

Dawg July 15, 2023 - 9:46 AM - 9:46 AM

B) Tapioca

B….Many years ago Jello used to make chocolate and orange tapioca pudding, orange was my favorite. I haven’t had homemade tapioca that I care for.

Roz July 15, 2023 - 12:33 PM - 12:33 PM

@S ~
Darn You, …. making me want either now.
I’ll go with B) Tapioca today.

Bread Pudding made with Croissants, …. and throw in some cut peaches & berries, … so Yummy!

Captain Bebops July 17, 2023 - 9:16 AM - 9:16 AM

My mother had a pretty good recipe for bread pudding but it didn’t grow on me until later when I doused it in half and half. I like french toast too.

Hanne Jeppesen July 15, 2023 - 2:19 PM - 2:19 PM

Definitely rice pudding. Rice pudding is the traditional dessert in Denmark on Christmas eve. We cook the rice in milk, let it cool, then add whipping cream, vanilla essence, and I would usually add a little Cherry Heering, can also add slivered almonds, but that is not the tradional recipe. It is usually served with a cherry sauce. When was growing up many would can cherries in the summer and save it for christmas. Here I buy canned cherries at Trader Joe’s, and then add cherry liquer. One year I changed the sauce and made a cranberry/chocolate sauce.

like both, but prefer tapioca.

S July 16, 2023 - 8:00 AM - 8:00 AM

“A”
but…
Looks like ‘B’ is the winner this week

and…
“B*” on the latter……
🙂

ps: Ok, Roz; did you make some?

Roz July 16, 2023 - 11:50 AM - 11:50 AM

@ S ~ Not today , … waiting for cooler weather.

Lee July 16, 2023 - 8:40 AM - 8:40 AM

I’ll go with ‘C’
I’ve never tried YUCK. Is that an ethnic dish? I’ll have to look for it. Does somebody
know a good spot? Thanks in advance!

Ken July 15, 2023 - 7:15 AM - 7:15 AM

Ever notice how the plastic bags at Safeway have gotten smaller over the years. You have to use more bags and pay more for them if you are sucked into their scam.

To Do List July 15, 2023 - 10:28 AM - 10:28 AM

Yes and shrinkflation where sellers reduce sizes and amounts but keep the price the same is also unenvironmental in addition to annoying. Latest I noticed is one box of Near East rice used to be enough for all of us and now they downsized it so it isn’t now enough. So now I will need to buy two boxes and all the extra cardboard I guess.

How about the freeways, Whats an oxymoron. Where only the rich rich and politicians can drive faster than the poor. That’s equity for you.

Hi everyone. Wondering if anyone has recommendations for a reliable honest pool company in Claycord that can help reverse a sudden algae situation happening.

Hope you all stay cool this weekend!

Simonpure July 15, 2023 - 2:58 PM - 2:58 PM

JJ…Providing you are in good heath you can do it all alone. It’s a task but simply start by shocking the S*@t out of it, drain about a third, brush and repeat. Let my above ground one get so bad I thought I was just gonna slice her open, but after some effort was able to revive. Grand kids coming for it today. Once you get it done you will feel a big accomplishment has been fulfilled and will make you stay on top of it. Good luck!!!

rogue rider July 15, 2023 - 5:34 PM - 5:34 PM

Concord has made a mistake with the new roadwork at the east end of Monument, there is no bike lane, the impression i get is they want bicycles to use the new sidewalk that meanders it’s wY to the next intersection, this is not acceptable to cyclists like myself that ride at traffic speed, is concord ready for me to ride on the new sidewalk at 25mph or more?
my only option as i see it it to endanger my life riding at 25 in the traffic lane while cars are pissed off because they want to drive 40mph but can’t because i am only riding 25mph
this was not planned well or it was deliberate to restrict cycling

Recent graduate with degree in electrical engineering has applied to 60 companies with no luck.
After reading replies to reddit post reminded me of last new electrical engineer I broke in.
He had moderate student loan debt and his pay was less than mine. (industrial electrician)
.
Something for high school graduates to ponder, how many electrical engineers does a company need?
Electrical maintenance department I worked in had two electrical engineer bosses and 14 electricians.
Train for limited number of engineering positions or gain a skill set in demand that employers are willing to pay up for with many positions and some turnover.
.
Businesses need regulatory certainty and political stability, neither of which exist at present to be confident to expand business and risk capital. Businesses are sitting on money just as they did during obama biden years.
.
Why not take four semesters at a junior college and learn a skill set that’s always in demand?
Two positions already filled or 14 positions with some turnover.
With junior college program training and roughly five years experience, can get a job just about anywhere with no problem.
