UPDATE: Pleasant Hill Police Give Strange Update On Last Night’s Shooting

A man who allegedly locked himself inside his Pleasant Hill home, shot his wife through a closed door and refused to talk to police negotiators has been left alone after an hours-long standoff.

At about 7 p.m. Thursday, officers were sent to a home in the 200 block of Cleopatra Drive, where they found a woman who had been shot through a locked garage door while she was trying to get into her house, according to Pleasant Hill police.

She was allegedly shot by her husband, who police say fired a single shot from a shotgun.

She was treated at a hospital for injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening and was later released.

The woman’s husband, who has not been identified, stayed in the house while SWAT team members secured the area, according to police.

For several hours afterward, he allegedly refused to communicate with crisis negotiators who tried to contact him via telephone and loudspeaker, police said in a news release Friday.

At about 2 a.m., the SWAT team “disengaged from the scene and the husband was left alone” inside the house, police said.

“The case is still active, it doesn’t mean he won’t be arrested. We’re monitoring the area,” said Pleasant Hill Police Lt. Jason Kleven.

Kleven said officers left the immediate area in order to initiate “a little cooling-off period.”

“With us there at his house, it makes tensions run a little bit higher,” Kleven said. “We’re not giving up the case or anything like that.”

During the standoff, several streets around the home were closed to traffic, including both directions of nearby Monument Boulevard, and neighbors were asked to evacuate or shelter in place.

Also, the man continued to post to social media during and after the standoff, including some messages that police believe indicated he might be suicidal.

Since the SWAT team left, the surrounding streets were reopened, neighbors were allowed back into their homes and officers continue to reach out to the man, Kleven said.

“There’s nothing we’ve seen that indicates there’s a danger to people there,” he said.

Another massive amount of cops cordoned off monument Blvd between Mohr Ln and Contra Costa Blvd. I had to go all the way up to North Main Street just to get on the freeway going home from work tonight. It’s so absurd like seriously, wipe this waste of life off already, and send him straight to hell so we can moved on and live more at ease!

While reading I was wondering why strange was in the headline. Should have known to wait for the twist. Biggest surprise since The Usual Suspects.

So, shooting your wife does not automatically deem someone a threat to the general public??

Seems that at least a 5150 is in order with a removal of his guns. Something is fishy here.

History has shown there are suicidal people who are quite happy to take someone else with them. Therefore leaving him to his own devices doesn’t seem like a prudent decision.
What happened to lobbing tear gas canisters through the window? Since he seemed to be enjoying posting on social media, perhaps shutting down his electricity would have been helpful. When all else failed, using the swat team PA to blast Judy Collins singing “Send in the Clowns” would have likely brought closure in short order.

WHAT??? What would they do with anyone else who did the same thing? You or I would be handcuffed and hauled off to jail, if not killed by SWAT. This is one of the worst examples of policing I have ever heard of. There must be more to the story than they’re telling us. Maybe he has the dirt on some high ranking people that he is threatening to spill?

Wait…so this whole time I could have just shot my ex and it would have been cool as long as I didn’t respond ? Would have saved me a bunch of money and heart ache.

The part of the story missing, being reported now by EB Times, is the guy is an ex-cop.

Dr. Jellyfinger December 8, 2023 - 8:09 PM - 8:09 PM

Well…… traffic on the weekend isn’t so bad…. they can detour!

Wage Slave December 8, 2023 - 10:30 PM - 10:30 PM

I’m guessing that it was bird or target shot if the wife wasn’t hurt too badly. If he’s an ex cop, he knows what is and isn’t lethal, so perhaps the police are interpreting his actions as an attempt to lure a them in for a suicide-by-cop. That would explain their decision to back off for a while.

Yikes! The area is shutdown again.

SuprisedSally December 9, 2023 - 3:14 PM - 3:14 PM

2 nights of closing down streets for this man with gun’s? That has been left alone to do whatever he deems necessary? Huh?
There has GOT to be more to this, Right? Will we ever get to know the truth to this?? It rieks corruption. How far does the rabbit hole Go
