Representative DeSaulnier Introduces Bill To Help Bring “Life-Saving Gun Safety Technology” To The Market

Representatives Mark DeSaulnier (CA-10), Zoe Lofgren (CA-18), and Don Beyer (VA-08) announced the introduction of the Advancing Gun Safety Technology Act (H.R. 6697), a bill that would help bring life-saving gun safety technology to the market, according to DeSaulnier’s Office.

Specifically, DeSaulnier says the bill would create a $10 million pilot program at the Department of Justice’s National Institute of Justice to support private-sector commercialization of gun safety technology.

Gun safety technology—like smart guns, user-authorized handguns, childproof guns, personalized guns, and safes and locking devices that include personalized technology—are designed to reduce the likelihood of an accidental or unauthorized use of a gun. According to the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence, each year nearly 500 people die from unintentional firearm injuries, and unintentional firearm injuries account for 37% of nonfatal firearm injuries.

“With gun violence taking such a devastating toll on our communities, and as the son of someone who took his life by gun suicide, I strongly believe that we need to use every tool in the toolbox to address the gun violence epidemic,” said Rep. Mark DeSaulnier (CA-10). “Gun safety technology will help reduce accidental shootings and gun suicides while protecting responsible gun owners, and this bill will help make that technology available to more people. I am grateful to join with my colleagues in introducing this important legislation.”

WHENWILLTHEYLEARN,
.
I haven’t heard anything about Congressman Mark DeSaulnier’s son or sons, where should he follow him/them? Or did you mean his father?

And then REQUIRE gun owners to purchase it.

Its already law, they just haven’t tried to enforce it. They passed a law a while back saying that when “smart guns” become commercially available, they would become the only type legally available for sale in state.

It would be struck down if they did.

It’s all been unreliable & impractical. They just want to make ownership more expensive & difficult. They will make it mandatory and find a reason to charge gun owners some kind of registration or training/testing fee.

What an idiot he is. This will accomplish nothing. Want to really make an impact, prosecute all gun crimes the way they use to be. No plea deals. Use a gun go to prison. Years back even the toughest guys very rarely carried or used a gun in fear of true prison time. Set boundaries that are known and if crossed you take the time. The amount of guns floating around will slowly dry up.

You are 100% right. The real question we should all be asking is, why do democrat leaders want to close more prisons and liberal DAs and judges keep releasing violent criminals back into society? Then you have evil politicians like Mark D using his father’s suicide to put more restrictions on law abiding citizens. Guns do not commit suicides people do.

Anyone who wants that kind of gun should be able to buy one. Ninety Nine percent of gun deaths however are caused by people who don’t give a hoot about child proofing. If only Mark would go after the root cause of 560 people being gunned down in just Chicago so far this year. Over a hundred in Oakland. St Louis is the murder capital. Forty thousand gun deaths so far this year in the US and half were suicides. Doubt if any safety feature would have saved any of them. Go get em Mark.

Politicians aren’t interested in solving problems….that’s too difficult. It’s easier to blame an inanimate object and prey on the emotions of the uninformed while quoting suspect data to justify their position.

DeSaulnier is no exception. He REFUSES to consider unbiased data, but cherry-picks the studies that support his opinions….

“Gun Suicide?”

How is he blaming guns for his father shooting himself?

If he drove off a cliff, would it be “Cliff Suicide?”

Fact is that criminals commit 99.9% of violence with guns. But the Dems don’t want to do anything bout that.

Newscum is trying to close prisons, for God’s sake!

It’s nice to know that Mark is doing something beside just collecting a pay check.
If it was up to the Democ-rats we wouldn’t have gun at all.
Does he know how many people cut themselves with knives every year.
Maybe we need a bill to cover that too.

Keep drinking the kool-aid.

None of the bill’s sponsors know anything about firearms- but only know they want to ban them; regardless of their claims.

In addition, he quotes data from an anti-gun organization- which is immediately suspect.

You ought to learn about firearms and the criminal justice system yourself…in addition to learning statistics.

Nope! December 13, 2023 - 3:29 PM - 3:29 PM

Good grief. Another do-nothing pilot program for $10M that will probably be counted as “new jobs” and will grow and grow over time to create “more new jobs” and waste taxpayer’s dollars. $10M to MAYBE save 500 lives? Sounds about right for the government…

You’re on point. This money will go to the pockets of his donors and patrons, and accomplish exactly nothing else. Anything the gun buying market wants is already being provided by a robust private sector, including “smart gun” type technology. Almost no one wants it.

So, will this $10 million program be funded with money that comes from the US government borrowing more money that puts us further in debt, or will this bill require the National Institute of Justice to create this program with existing funding?
.
I don’t see a need for this program, if there’s a marked for these products they’ll sell on their own, but we shouldn’t be subsidizing these products to create a government concocted market.

DeSaulnier’s pronouncements always get lots of comments on Claycord. Mostly those wondering how he ever got elected in the first place.

THE BLACK KNIGHT December 15, 2023 - 10:39 AM - 10:39 AM

RUNDOG,
.
Congressman Mark DeSaulnier was elected to the Concord City Council as a Republican, he was then appointed to the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors as a Republican by Republican Governor Pete Wilson, he then switched parties at the urging of Democrat Congressman George Miller so that he could remain in office and be elected to higher office, which was how he was able to remain Supervisor, and was elected to the California State Assembly, California State Senate, and the US House of Representatives, which is why we still have him as our representative today.

The Professor December 14, 2023 - 10:46 AM - 10:46 AM

500 accidental gun death per year? That’s what this buffoon is worried about.
How many die EACH DAY from drug overdoses?
How many die each year at the hands of an illegal? Same with rapes and assaults?
How many babies die each year due to abortions?

You’d think a stand up guy like Mark would make these high priorities if he really worried about unnecessary deaths. But he’s not, and he won’t.

He says, “with gun violence taking a toll on our communities.” How about mental health violence taking the toll and getting the blame? A gun, knife, car, cliff, baseball bat, hammer has NEVER jumped up and murdered a single human by itself. It’s the mentally, angry human that does the killing. Mental health and addictions and anger management issues is where you should be spending our taxes on. Maybe we would support you.

Michael A Cordero December 14, 2023 - 1:51 PM - 1:51 PM

Sometimes I feel we would be better off if we passed a law that places a moratorium on any government official introducing any new laws for one year. Since they all follow party lines instead of the American citizens lines. Stop all aid to foreign countries and their citizens and invest those funds to ONLY American programs. Think of all the budget surpluses we would have.

Bobo December 14, 2023 - 9:14 PM - 9:14 PM

Here is a hint marky mark, put some of these idiots in jail where they belong. Then maybe so many people wouldn’t be getting guns to protect there families.

ConcordRes2 December 15, 2023 - 6:59 AM - 6:59 AM

He needs to save the 10 million and focus on enforcing the current gun laws. When will politicians figure out criminals don’t care about new gun safety because they don’t buy guns from a legal gun store. This is just another way to create a paid commission which Mark will benefit. California is already 68 billion in debt stop spending money we don’t have.
