Being a fan of horror movie my favorite Christmas movie would be one of those but not sure about the title looked it up on Rotten Tomatoes Christmas horror movie list. And right there at ranked number two is the Finnish file “Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale”. This film beats the hell out of the “Krampus” movies that were released around that time. And the other movie I thought about was ranked at number three “Better Watch Out” from 2016. This one I recall had quite a twist to it. Ranked number one on their list was “The Nightmare Before Christmas” I think I watched many years ago and I’m sure many here have seen it.

Any saccharine soppy Christmas movie would make the worst and there are lots of those but I don’t try to seek them out. And if I’ve seen one easily forgotten. I do have one bargain Blu-Ray that was a Los Angeles indie “Silent Night Zombie Night” back during the zombie movie craze where every other movie was a zombie movie (yawn). It was a disappointment. I

t was funny how many of the 45 movies listed there I’ve seen and some have on disc.

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. The scene in Kevin’s hotel room when he plays the VCR tape of the gangster with the Tommy gun is hilarious.
The world lost a great talent when John Hughes died, he made some very funny movies. The Home Alone movies, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Uncle Buck, Sixteen Candles, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, were some of his best works.

I’m sure there are plenty of bad Christmas movies out there, but I haven’t seen any of them, so I can’t say that I have a least favorite.

Favorite: Tie between A Christmas Carol (actually called Scrooge) from 1951 with Alastair Sim and We’re No Angels (the Bogart, Ray, Ustinov version).

Least favorite: So many I have never seen. Of those I have seen, Elf, maybe.

Favorite: A Christmas Story. The new sequel is good, too, with many of the same actors as grownups.

Favorite: “Invasion USA” with Chuck Norris. Has a scene in which the “evil” Cubans & Russians blow up a neighborhood during Christmas time. Also a shootout/car chase inside a Miami area shopping mall after one of the bad guys tries to blow up the mall.
Second favorite: “Silent Night Deadly Night”, the early 1980s slasher film involving a killer Santa Claus. The film caused quite an outrage because of its subject. (Ironically, the film’s director was the one who did such films as LIfe & Times of Grizzly Adams, In Search of Noah’s Ark, and The Lincoln Conspiracy as the owner of Utah based Sunn Classic Pictures)
Honorable mentions: Bad Santa, Black Christmas (original from the early 1970s, the film was directed by Bob Clark, who later directed “A Christmas Story”, night and day difference in the two films)
Least favorites: It’s A Wonderful Life, any of the “Hallmark Channel” sap crap

All this hate for “It’s a Wonderful Life”! That’s ridiculous, it’s a great movie. That’s like hating Casablanca just because it is so widely praised. Contrarian nonsense. The scene where he’s yelling at his kids because he’s stressing out about the lost money is so real. People think it’s just a feel good movie because it is so popular and because it has a ending. Bogus! There’s more real pain in that one scene than in a whole pile of supposedly gritty movies that are just posturing.

Overplayed, sure. Overrated? Nope!

But I’m with the commenter above who flagged A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim as Scrooge. Legendary performance!

Also, A Christmas Story is amusing but way overrated. Doesn’t deserve its status. And ‘Elf’ has a few good moments but is pretty bad overall. Impossible to pick the worst; there is such a pile of Christmas junk it’s impossible to experience it all or even sample it in an adequate way.

I totally agree with you. I think those that don’t like the movie overlook the message. The movie shows what life would have been like for many in Bedford Falls if George Bailey had never been born, that can apply to all us. Certainly we don’t all leave the mark George Bailey did, saving his brother, who then saved many, chain reaction, rescuing the Savings and Loan, but all of us have made an impact on several persons lives, and if you are decent good person that impact would mostly be positive.

Hanne Jeppesen December 19, 2023 - 12:58 PM - 12:58 PM

I’m surprised how many dislike “It’s a wonderful life”. It is one of my favorites, not only as a Christmas movie, but as a movie. It has such a positive message, and who does not like James Stewart and Donna Reed?
Someone asked what is a Christmas movie, good question. Another of my favorite movies is “Lion in the Winter” It is about Henry ll and his feud with his 3 sons and his wife Eleanor, who has imprisoned, but he lets her out for Christmas, and the movie is about their relationship, and who of their sons they want to succeed Henry, Eleanor wants Richard, the oldest, Henry wants John the youngest. The dialoque is very clever and witty, the acting is off the wall, Henry is played by Peter O’Toole, Eleanor by Katherine Hepburn and Richard by Anthony Hopkins. I have seen a couple of different versions of Scrooge, besides the original there were another one that was quite good, I forgot who was in it though.
