UPDATE: ALERT: Possible HazMat Situation On Pacheco Blvd. At Howe Rd.

Contra Costa County hazardous materials crews are continuing to work Tuesday afternoon to determine what substance is in a trailer that was left abandoned on a main road in Martinez, a county fire captain said.

Crews responded shortly before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday to investigate an abandoned trailer on wheels along the 3300 block of Pacheco Boulevard and learned it had been tagged by the county Sheriff’s Office as abandoned on March 4, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Capt. Chris Toler said.

The trailer has “the type of container that normally carries everything from hazardous materials to milk” and had enough of the substance to prevent a responding tow truck crew from being able to tow it away, Toler said.

There are no identifiable markings or license plate that can help investigators determine what is inside the container, so hazmat technicians were called out and were still working as of 1 p.m. to figure out the nature of the substance, according to Toler.

Pacheco Boulevard is blocked in both directions between Howe Road and Morello Avenue for the investigation.

Thanks to Doug for the photos from the scene!

Don’t see any placards or holder frames on tank could be headed for scrap but FIRE has to assume worst until proven safe. Emergency Response Book 2024 version isn’t out yet. For those interested here is 2020 version. Placards are interesting to decode and requirements for types of transport vessels.

.
Had one for work and still on phone. Best advice, stay away from tanks on wheels especially on freeways.

They cannot be that concerned with it, no PPE, not even gloves. There are no monitors in play to sniff the air. They do have a single stage, Decon pool set up, so that is good.

Now granted, these pictures were probably taken after the initial recon, because you can see a level B/A Suit (can’t tell from the image if fully encapsulating) hanging on the fence in the first picture.

I don’t think it is transporting milk.

Yeah it turned out the tank had vegetable oil in it! Seriously, no joke.
