Contra Costa County Supervisors To Consider Forming Office Of Racial Equity, Social Justice – Supes Also Expected To Declare Racism A Public Health Crisis

The Contra Costa Board of Supervisors is expected to approve forming an Office of Racial Equity and Social Justice to address “equity, bias and inclusion in county government and beyond,” with an eye toward a county government that uses equity and social justice to inform governing decisions.

The Office of Racial Equity and Social Justice, as proposed by County Supervisors John Gioia and Federal Glover, would be part of the County Administrator’s office.

Its overarching mission would be to promote equity and eliminate disparities in Contra Costa County – especially within its governmental operations, including budget decisions — with the initial priority to eliminate structural racism, according to the staff report.

The office’s main tasks would be to better coordinate, strengthen and expand the county’s existing work on equity and inclusion, and to partner with community organizations and leaders, cities and school districts to
implement that work.

In a separate but related move, the Contra Costa supervisors could also vote to approve a resolution declaring racism a public health crisis.

The Contra Costa Board of Supervisors meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. today, and the virtual meeting can be accessed at this link.

Sooo… The county has no money for hospitals and community services, so it has to beg the voters to tax themselves more? Yet it has enough money for another meaningless political sinecure?
How do the people who voted for tax increases feel now? Still supporting measure X and other taxes?

JRocks November 10, 2020 - 9:27 AM - 9:27 AM

One party rule is the biggest public health crisis we face. The lack of political diversity has lead to a dysfunctional government that will eventually self destruct. After the election results it is clear that the support for the Democrats is getting stronger and support for any alternative party is almost non-existent. We are on the road to a soft tyranny where the minority has no power. Sad.

Trex November 10, 2020 - 9:34 AM - 9:34 AM

And guess how they are going to pay for it. From the GENERAL FUND! the same place the money from Measure X is going into to. Called it. It wasn’t going to what they advertised it to. Board of stupes can spend it as they please. Congrats voters. Better be a two way street in that new office.

Led November 10, 2020 - 10:11 AM - 10:11 AM

Racial disparities are real and sometimes, depending on the circumstances and the nature of the disparity, the government should try to do something about them. But the approach exemplified here is to subvert normal governance processes and hand a bunch of power to ideologues. That’s bad enough at the county level: it’s potentially regime change at the state and federal level. Self-governance and equality before the law don’t equal “rule by experts in equality.”

If you want a government more responsive to the needs of racial minorities, you should elect a government more responsive to the needs of racial minorities. Instead we have a move to change the structure and operation of our systems of government.

Dawg November 10, 2020 - 11:52 AM - 11:52 AM

In the 1950’s California was a great state to live in. The war was over, veterans returned to the same job they had before the war, people were buying homes in the suburbs, there was a car in just about every garage, and there was a newfangled gadget called a television that people were buying. Goodwin Knight, (Republican) was governor.

Rolaids November 10, 2020 - 12:37 PM - 12:37 PM

@ Dawg Unless you were black. In many California suburbs blacks were barred from owning homes, or even renting them.

Will they ever demand a massive majority Asian business place hire a white person? No.

Will they demand an all-black business hire a white person? No.

Will they persistently, doggedly harass companies with even a small plurality of white employees? YES.

SF oh November 10, 2020 - 4:58 PM - 4:58 PM

@Rolaids – “In many California suburbs blacks were barred from owning homes …”. Yep and so were Asians!!! Like the patriarch of my family who was denied the opportunity to purchase a home based on race. Did he choose to whine and complain for the rest of his life – then teach his children to whine and complain and hate? No – he bought a home in a different city. He became a well-liked and productive member of the mostly White and Hispanic community. He raised a family, instilled in them the value of a good education and hard work. Many races have been discriminated against over the years – and still are today. Not just one race – every race. So sick of this crap.

Maybe the only reason they keep voting them in, is because some votes get tossed, shredded, burned, used as toilet paper.

They go up to the fragrance desk and cover themselves from head to toe and stink up the place

*** The conservative idea, just saying ***

The Office of Great Schools, Roads and Transportation, as proposed by County Supervisors, would be part of the County Administrator’s office.

Its overarching mission would be to promote great school outcomes, improve roads and public transportation in Contra Costa County – especially within its governmental operations, including budget decisions — with the initial priority to eliminate bad schools, lousy roads and public transportation that doesn’t work, according to the staff report.

The office’s main tasks would be to better coordinate, strengthen and expand the county’s existing work on schools, roads and public transit, and to partner with community organizations and leaders, cities and school districts to

Cautiously Informed November 10, 2020 - 8:27 PM - 8:27 PM

There are. But the majority of California voters intellectual stimulation is Facebook, the Kardashians and American idol. Consequently, they vote in politicians who are uneducated, untrained and totally incapable. One politician specifically comes to mind, who has substantial training and background in bar tending. And, the voters continually vote in career politicians who have accomplished absolutely nothing(and who have zero accountability for actions).
So how can we ever expect the inept and so-called political leaders to fix problems like the failing education system, roads and infrastructure, homelessness, the housing shortage, jobs and the like?

The Fearless Spectator November 10, 2020 - 6:51 PM - 6:51 PM

Nobody mentions discrimination or equality anymore. Apparently, that’s no longer important. All they talk about is equity. Michelle Obama says we have to give up a piece of the pie and give it to others. Hey, don’t ask about her 29 acre $12M estate on Martha’s Vineyard; that doesn’t count. This must be funded by the middle class.

They made this about money, and money alone. If that’s the problem, just write them a check and move on.

Highway Veteran November 10, 2020 - 9:29 PM - 9:29 PM

This is my opinion based on experience, research, and observation.
There is emphasis on the “systematic racism” label that is being used by many Democratic politicians. If a person is considered “racist” they are ostracized, loose jobs, and sometimes treated unfairly. Freedom of speech is being attacked if a particular word offends another person. There will always be bias and prejudice, and that cannot be controlled.

I lived through the Civil Rights movement, went to school and worked with people from all backgrounds. We were taught to respect one another. We were known as “Americans” in those days and it seemed to work. By the way, merit, ability, and integrity are characteristics more important than race, gender, religion, etc.

Laws have been enacted to protect individuals. For the Board of Supervisors to consider this issue a public health crisis appears to be a way to control citizens to obey and accept values contrary to being American. I think it divides people. As a society, it’s important to get along, even if people disagree! I think most citizens just want to earn a living and raise a family!
