COVID-19 Study From Oxford, UC Berkeley Finds Higher Risk To Pregnant Women Than Previously Known

Researchers at University of Oxford and University of California at Berkeley have found a significantly higher risk of severe complications than previously known for pregnant women with COVID-19 and for their newborns.

The study released last week found that women who had COVID-19 and displayed symptoms of the virus during their pregnancy were more than 50 percent more likely to experience complications — such as premature birth, pre-eclampsia, admission to intensive care and death — compared to non-infected pregnant women.

In addition, the study found that the largest risk is premature birth, where newborns of infected women are “nearly three times more at risk of severe medical complications, such as admission to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – mostly due to premature birth.”

Led by Oxford researchers, the study was published recently by the Journal of the American Medical Association in JAMA Pediatrics. It included 2,100 pregnant women in 43 maternity hospitals across 18 countries worldwide, according to an Oxford news00ollnoj9009 release.

Researchers said the study is unique because each woman affected by COVID-19 was compared to two non-infected pregnant women giving birth at the same time in the same hospital.

The findings highlight the need to prioritize the health of pregnant people when developing public health measures, the researchers said.

“We now know that the risks to mothers and babies are greater than we assumed at the start of the pandemic and that known health measures when implemented must include pregnant women,” said Stephen Kennedy, an Oxford professor of reproductive medicine who co-led the study.

Despite low numbers of deaths among the patients, the risk of dying was 22 times higher for the women who had symptomatic COVID.

The good news is that the study also found that pregnant women who had symptomless COVID infections had very similar results as non-infected pregnant women.

The statistical analysis for the study was conducted by researchers at the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley, led by Robert Gunier, an assistant researcher, and Stephen Rauch, a data analyst at Berkeley Public Health.

“Luckily, we found that COVID-19 positive people who were asymptomatic had mostly similar outcomes to people that were COVID-19 negative,” Gunier said in a statement released last week by UC Berkeley.

The study found the impact on newborns was less significant than on their mothers. While babies born to mothers who had symptomatic COVID-19 were more likely to develop complications, only 12.9 percent tested positive within the first few days of birth. In addition, breastfeeding did not appear to increase the risk of infection.

“We now know that the risks to mothers and babies are greater than we assumed at the start of the pandemic and that known health measures when implemented must include pregnant women,” said Oxford’s Kennedy. “The information should help families, as the need to do all one can to avoid becoming infected is now clear. It also strengthens the case for offering vaccination to all pregnant women.”

We are coming up on a year and a half. Any fear they are selling I am not buying. Nobody I know has been sick this is a power grab and nothing less.

Kinda makes sense that pregnant women and their pre-born babies would be at greater risk from this virus. Same holds true for many diseases. Moral of the story? Get Vaccinated Now!

bdml May 4, 2021 - 9:47 AM - 9:47 AM

None of the lies spread by the supposed authorities make any sense, moral of the story is that nobody should listen to you or anybody else on this board for their health advice or opinions…

Chuckie recommending vaccinations? My how times have changed! 😀

Captain-

I have never been against vaccination, of any kind. I did oppose letting teachers get in front of the line. Same with politicians like AOC. I have already had both doses.

i hope pelosi doesnt scold you for not putting a equity slant on this

any how this statement seems a little lacking for college a study
“Luckily, we found that COVID-19 positive people who were asymptomatic had mostly similar outcomes to people that were COVID-19 negative,”

common sense or over hyped china syndrom for political gains to change election laws conveniently

lol making this statement twice seems armature at best lol

Where is the study involving the risks of pregnant women getting the vaccine, and will they be able to safely breastfeed their baby?
I wouldn’t trust anything coming out of a liberal school, especially UC Berkeley where they are making vaccines mandatory for every student and employee.
Don’t touch your face, and wash your hands.

A study on the safety of the vaccines for pregnant women and safety of breastfeeding babies is here: https://tinyurl.com/6a6safja

If you were really concerned about the safety of pregnant women you would get vaccinated. We all need to get vaccinated so we dont spread the virus to people who are at higher risk of covid complications, such as pregnant women, the elderly or people with medical conditions.

Dawg May 4, 2021 - 12:12 PM - 12:12 PM

Thanks for the info Natalie, but what you said has already been said hundreds of times, and I simply don’t buy into it.
Someday, maybe in a couple years they will produce a vaccine that is approved by the FDA, and perhaps even better than the vaccines we have today, then I may consider getting vaccinated. I just don’t believe COVID-19 is as bad as they are telling us. My 98 year old mother was infected with the COVID, she was sick for two weeks and made a full recovery. She died a couple of months ago from old age, and because she she had COVID several months before her death, the coroner put COVID-19 as the cause of death. This only demonstrates to me that they are lying to us.

bdml May 4, 2021 - 1:49 PM - 1:49 PM

@ Dawg
Sorry to hear about your mother, mine is 89 and recovered completely from this flu. People like Natalie constantly pushing a trash narrative and labeling people is not very unifying and I doubt they are truly concerned with anybody but herself

errrr
your statement seems false

didnt they just vaccine all the supposed high risk

thats why they started offering to the illegals a equity stricken

only to the next day offer it up for anyone on 2 legs
be it in county residents or not

huge trillions in vaccines and they just scared you into making more rich that you could ever dream

chuckie the troll May 4, 2021 - 1:09 PM - 1:09 PM

Get vaccinated to protect yourself. Skip it at your own risk. In the mean time, completely open this nation. Get the government out of my grocery store, Home Depot, Church, restaurants, barber shops, bedrooms (shout-out to the CC County pandemic sex-guide), etc…

The problem is that most government strongly resists giving back rights once they are taken away.

Yeah, it’s as if commerce and the right to provide a living for yourself and your family are not included in the idea of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

That the American people would acquiesce to these shutdowns shows how far we have sunk as a people since 1776.

We gladly accept perceived safety over liberty, ignoring the fact that we were warned not to do that by our own Founding Fathers on numerous occasions..

This is due to the feminization of our society. And I’m not blaming the women — they are just being who they are — I blame the men for becoming meek in the modern sense, as opposed to meek in the ancient sense, which mean’t a dangerous man who chose to be good, which is the kind of “meek” actually referenced in the quote, “The meek shall inherit the earth.”

Bdml…you are very fortunate to have not known anyone with COVID-19. Be thankful!

I am a teacher at a private preschool where there are 35 employees, in December we had a positive case and just as soon as we found out everyone was already infected except 3 teachers! Parents were hospitalized, children Also tested positive! 3 people were severe enough that they were hospitalized one of which was put on a ventilator. I was one of the three that tested negative twice but was severely sick for 2 weeks straight with all of the symptoms except loss of smell and taste! I refuse to accept the findings of my tests because I do not normally get sick and it was no coincidence that I did!

In just a blink of an eye the world around me was devastated. It is not a joke I also have several friends that also were infected and some that lost relatives and loved ones.

I cannot put enough emphasis on this to describe just how quickly it spreads! In relation to this article, which is why I read it to begin with,
Two of my coworkers were also pregnant when this happened and one gave Birth a month early, the other gave birth the same day she was 20 weeks along and her baby was only a couple pounds at birth. Luckily both are living and the little one is getting stronger and gaining weight.

One story you don’t hear during this pandemic Is people who are weened off the ventilator and doing ok! Well that thankfully is the story of the one person I spoke of! After being in the ventilator for over 2 months with double Covid phnemonia he is doing much better but still going through tehab to gain the functions he lost during his hospitalization. That’s a story that needs to be shared! As most think of the ventilator as the end because that’s all we heard was those that died on them.

So if you don’t know anyone who’s had or or been affected by this consider yourself very fortunate!
