Tony Hicks – Contra Costa County’s rate of COVID-19 related hospitalizations are down, and health officials are currently working out details to possibly modify the standing health order requiring people in restaurants and gyms to show proof of vaccination or a recent negative test and wear masks while inside.
Dr. Ori Tzvieli, the medical director of the county health department, told the county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, “We are working in coordination with other counties in the region who have indoor masking orders to establish criteria for these counties to ease some of these restrictions. We’re expecting to announce something with details at the end of this week.”
According to the health department’s COVID-19 dashboard on its website, 14 day averages of hospitalizations in Contra Costa are down from 201 on Sept. 1 to 82 on Monday. The number Tuesday was 73.
Deputy Health Director Erika Jenssen told the board of the most recent statistics, “we are cautious, happy about these numbers, but also cautious.”
Jenssen said the Pfizer vaccine is currently available to people ages 12 and up in the county and it’s possible it could become available to children 5 to 11 under an emergency use authorization issued later this month.
“We do expect that younger children ages 5 to 11 years old will be able to start being vaccinated somewhere around Nov. 1, depending on all those variables,” Jenssen said. “We are incredibly pleased and hopeful about this because it will mean that kids in that age group, 5 to 11, could’ve received their first dose by Thanksgiving and be fully vaccinated in time for the winter holidays.”
Though the state last week mandated COVID-19 vaccinations for school children in 2022, it likely won’t be mandated for children ages 5-11 until the FDA gives full approval, probably in July.
Jenssen also said the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued an advisory strongly recommending pregnant women get vaccinated.
“We know that vaccination rates are much lower among pregnant people — only 31 percent of people who are pregnant have been vaccinated,” Jenssen said.

If a mom chooses to not be vaccinated, there is no evidence that the virus itself can lead to birth defects, miscarriage, or any other problems. But a fever in early pregnancy, from COVID-19 or any other cause, can raise the chances of birth defects. And severe lung illnesses late in your pregnancy can make you more likely to deliver your baby prematurely. Some babies born to women who had coronavirus were born preterm. But it’s not clear whether the virus was to blame.
It’s a different time to be pregnant, however, thankfully the vaccine is one or many ways to keep both mom and baby safe.

I suspect that inability to persuade is that science does not yet support vaccination of pregnant women to the point that doctors are comfortable with advising “yes, vaccination is safe for you and the baby.” For example, https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/nejmoa2104983 is from April and says there is insufficient data.

Can you tell me in my reply I said anything about deaths? I was showing the difference of how much easier people get heart problems at a much higher rate then the vaccine will give. Yes it is a concern as everyone knows that. But, More people actually do recover from the vaccine related issues then then people who had Covid related issues. That is only 20,000 deaths out of 185.7 million people who are FULLY vaccinated. And lets just say 15k with issues of the vaccine. So out of all numbers. Lets say 35k issues from vaccines right? 185.7 million people that were fully vaccinated. 35k people had issues. Now more then double that number of people and you have how many people have had at least 1 shot. 397 million.

Like I have stated. It is very sad to see anyone die or have a issue with anything. I wish everything that was given we would all be ok. And I wish Covid was like the flu or cold. But the reality it’s not. Choosing 1 side and not going off the numbers is just wrong. I hope they can get this figured out and I hope this Covid pandemic gets over with soon. I have lost a number of people to this virus so I see what it has done. I maybe a little more cautious then others as I was born with a heart defect. But, That doesn’t stop me from going out. Of course, they will encourage testing, especially asymptomatic people, during this time. Got to get in those false positives to bulk up that number. The CoVid Card check never worked anyway, Resturants don’t want to be an extension of the County’s enforcement arm. I know of 4 specific locations that ether were not diligent on the check or did not bother. The County will repeal the edict if only to save face
I just went out to dinner last night at a local restaurant and was never asked for proof of vaccination. Glad to see that some businesses actually show some common sense.

I saw two recent news stories about unvaccinated women who caught Covid while pregnant. They only got to hold their newborn babies once and died within hours of having given birth. The actual scientists are telling pregnant women to get vaccinated, because it works and doesn’t harm either them or their unborn children.
Please cite your scientific data source, The Observer, about the vaccine working and doesn’t harm either mother and unborn. Since the beginning of time women have died in childbirth…

First, I must point out that women who follow prenatal care will see their obstetrician ~9 visits, so there must be dialogue about risks and benefits of taking the vaccine..not surprised that only 30% of these patients are deciding to take the vaccine.
If you see the CDC page you linked under Safety and Effectiveness shows that “No safety concerns were found in animal studies” Early data on the safety includes data from self reporting systems VAERS, V-Safe, VSD and CISA Project. These are the same ‘self-reporting’ systems currently criticized by many for the vaccine adverse events.
No adverse pregnancy-related outcomes occurred in previous clinical trials that were used for Ebola vaccination, not Covid-19! This leads me to believe that the clinical trials in all trimesters are happening in real-world.
Research item number 1 from The New England Journal of Medicine concluded:
“Preliminary findings did not show obvious safety signals among pregnant persons who received mRNA Covid-19 vaccines. However, more longitudinal follow-up, including follow-up of large numbers of women vaccinated earlier in pregnancy, is necessary to inform maternal, pregnancy, and infant outcomes.”
I agree, it is easy to look up facts if you read. Vaccines should be discussed with your doctor– as pregnant women are obviously doing.
I take this as an indirect recognition that the vaccine mandate didn’t work out as well as expected. The only place I have seen enforcing the vaccine mandate is the Sunvalley mall food court, which is ironic because they constantly have rodent outbreaks. Most other restaurants either closed down their indoor dining or have signs on the door but are not actively enforcing it.
