As Winter Arrives, PG&E Offers Tips To Help Customers Save Money And Energy

This week marks the start of the winter season. To get ready for the colder temperatures and the longer nights that can add up to higher energy bills, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) offers ways to help customers conserve energy.

Any increase in our customers’ energy bills can be challenging, particularly during the ongoing economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rising cost of natural gas. Natural gas prices for this winter (November 2021 through March 2022) are currently more than double the prices seen last winter. PG&E passes through the cost of its energy purchases directly to our customers and does not earn a profit from these purchases.

“We recognize the impact all of these factors have on our customers which is why we are always here to help with practical ways to manage cold weather energy costs. The first day of winter is a good reminder that simple behavior changes, energy efficiency and weatherization can help save energy and money,” said Aaron August, PG&E’s Vice President of Business Development & Customer Engagement.

Ways to Save Energy this Winter

Try these ideas to help you stay warm and reduce energy costs this winter:

  • Lower your thermostat when away: Save about 1 percent on heating costs per each degree lowered over an eight-hour time frame.
  • Control water temperature: Set water heater thermostat at 120 degrees or lower. Save about 10 percent in water heating costs for every ten degrees lowered.
  • Microwave and save: Reheating leftovers in a microwave can take less time and uses up to 80 percent less energy than a standard oven.
  • Upgrade Lighting: LEDs use at least 75 percent less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting.

Get Help with Past Due Bills

Customers struggling to pay their bills can learn more about the following programs:

PG&E automatically began enrolling all residential and small business customers with past due balances over 60 days in new extended payment arrangements in September. Customers will be automatically enrolled on an ongoing basis based on eligibility through September 2022. To date more than 810,000 customers are enrolled in the program helping customers reduce unpaid balances over time and protects those enrolled from disconnection once the process restarts next year.

They forgot one. Buy a cord of firewood for about $400 bucks and stay toasty warm without running your furnace. Screw you PG&E and Governor’s appointees that watch over you. Gross.

Yep, my wood burning stove is keeping us very warm! Glad we have it. A lot cheaper than PGE.

Corrupt PG&E ripping all of us off. 32 cents per Kw. in Nevada 9 cents.

It’s all that “free” energy provided by the wind and the sun that somehow manages to end up costing the ratepayers a small fortune every month,

Remember that Newsom before he got abducted by aliens was talking about breaking up PG&E. That might help.

WC-Creeker, should be mentioned that one needs a fireplace to do that! 😄

Yup, my November bill was pretty much twice that of October so my strategy did not work. Checking in on the PG&E site on how much energy my December strategy is working looks better. I had to condition myself to being used to a lower house temperature (I work at home). Otherwise I was already doing things that were listed.

I still don’t recall California being this cold at this time of year since I moved here 30 years ago (back then Californians were leaving). These temps used to seem to occur in January and February.

Captain Bebops—You can thank Punxsutawney Phil, the little rascal predicted six more weeks of winter this year.

And I clicked this link, expecting how-to tips on by-passing PG&E meters!!

How about you just simply lower rates…

Ricardoh December 22, 2021 - 11:18 AM - 11:18 AM

You think PG&E is telling you how to save money but what they are really doing is trying to keep up with the amount of growth. You use less they don’t have to expand.

The best one not provided by PG&E is “move out of California”…

Captain Bebops December 22, 2021 - 2:12 PM - 2:12 PM

How about “take back California”? Since when is it the corporate democrats right to run the state? Push back. I have noticed this state tends to flip back and forth over time as to what party is in charge so there may be a change next year.

H December 22, 2021 - 1:45 PM - 1:45 PM

PG&E is the worst power company in the United States of America. Not only do they charge customer outrageously high energy prices (second only to our Island state, which has good reason to be so high), but they barely manage their system and cause people to die. Every part of California where there’s service from a different power company has drastically lower rates than what PG&E charges. When they fail, they weasel their way out of culpability and make the customers pay fees to cover for their negligence.

CAtoTX December 22, 2021 - 10:02 PM - 10:02 PM

Remember when Californians were saying how bad the Texas power grid was during our once in a lifetime storm? It’s a regular winter now and California can’t even keep up with that.
