Well of course it should but for no other reason than it’s stupid, but everyone else should already know if it’s Chinese related then it’s garbage.

In general, I very much am opposed to bans and prefer to see market forces determine what product or services survives and which don’t. But spying…yeah, I would support a ban on this app.

Oooo sweet sweet libertarianism. Makes me feel warm and cozy inside. I also don’t want bans but I think the social media traffic algorithm is incompatible with society so they all need to go.

Jnet March 23, 2023 - 12:25 PM - 12:25 PM

Probably the reason why TikTok is in question now is due to Elon Musk crashing Instagram and Zuckerberg losing money on Facebook! Just blaming China for TikTok but no problem with Bezos and Amazon Chinese Goods we were all trained to buy during Covid and Mall Shutdowns???

I believe you mean Elon crashed Twitter. Facebook owns Instagram.

Data Scientist March 23, 2023 - 12:52 PM - 12:52 PM

For the reasons Congress is trying to pass? Absolutely not. With the reasonings they’re trying to give, all social media platforms (ESPECIALLY Facebook/Meta) should be banned. I was listening to the proceedings this morning and had to turn it off because it was clear that the “boomer” representatives had absolutely no idea about anything tech or data related. That being said, Gen Z and young millennials are definitely going to be pissed about this and it will show in the 2024 elections if this ban passes.

@Data Scientist
What we have here are two different perspectives, because what I saw and heard were representatives who had done their homework.

There’s the Good, Bad, & Ugly with anything. BUT, Chinese Spying & Teen Addiction sounds dangerous.

Doesn’t matter. I would be more worried about the tracking and dormant-chip/access imbedded into this device in my hand. This is such a miss-focus by all politicians and a significant risk to the country.

We continue to push more and more products to be built offshore to save cost. We continue to suspect China of many things – yet we continue to open the door to the Trojan horses they build and WILLINGLY bring them in our homes. TikTok?? THATs your concern? Don’t use it and problem solved. Now go around your house, office, car, personal devices etc and count all the products made in China that have a chip. We saw what could happen with a chip shortage – now apply a kill switch to all these devices… we will be paralyzed as a country.

I’ll be dead when China pulls the gates of the Trojan horses – but I want this post read aloud when it happens. O wait – there won’t be a phone or computer or data center to read it from. We’ll…just remember me people!! Lol

Facebook collects and sells your data too. Other apps on your phone collect data from you and sell it as well. The reason the TVs are so cheap nowadays is that smart TVs track what you watch and sell that data it’s all the same. The only difference is it’s China but they said even North Korea has hacked financial in health profiles of all Americans everything is digital

Every where you go on the internet they know everything about you. As far as TICTOC goes I think the biggest problem is the dangerous challenges. The other thing is the wasted time for kids. However just using their phone all of the time is a waste.

The headlines in MSM said the government wants to ban TikTok but if you read on you’d find if it was on government devices. Probably nothing much more dangerous on TikTok than what we discuss here. Just wait until congress wants to ban Claycord.com. 😄

Domo March 23, 2023 - 2:23 PM - 2:23 PM

The real problem is how much younger people spend on the screen in total ….. if you ban TikTok – what about WeChat? … have you seen their videos lately?!

KT March 23, 2023 - 2:31 PM - 2:31 PM

NO. TikTok is the only social media that we get the REAL news on what’s REALLY going on. Because TikTok provides the REAL news, most likely this is why the US wants to ban it.

Should have already been done.

Yes, TikTok’s Chief Executive could not reassure lawmakers in testimony before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce that the app doesn’t pose a risk to it’s 150 million users nor share user data with the Chinese Communist Party and more.

The Fearless Spectator March 23, 2023 - 6:11 PM - 6:11 PM

The best way to reassure the Biden administration is to write a check. Works every time.

ClayDen March 23, 2023 - 6:17 PM - 6:17 PM

Ban it? Absolutely. This shouldn’t even be a question.

JR March 23, 2023 - 6:41 PM - 6:41 PM

Yes

Gary Benton March 23, 2023 - 10:20 PM - 10:20 PM

No.

Hope Johnson March 24, 2023 - 4:50 AM - 4:50 AM

Our government should not be banning sources of info. Sounds like they want to ban TikTok not because it is collecting data but because the US security agencies aren’t in control of censoring what is or is not allowed on it. Same reason the government now demonizes Elon Musk since Twitter released info on government demands to censor. Google censors info at the request of the government in China. But the US is supposed to be a free country. Why would we want to imitate China by encouraging government to control what we see?

Bob Kazamakis March 24, 2023 - 1:46 PM - 1:46 PM

Of course we should. We should also ban every website that I don’t like. That’s how free speech works, right?
