Cal Fire Contributes $47M To Combat Extreme Heat In Bay Area Schools

Cal Fire is providing $47 million to protect California’s children from extreme heat by creating more green spaces at schools, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced.

Schools in six Bay Area counties will receive some of the grant money.

With an understanding that extreme heat often disproportionately impacts California’s children at school, the state is providing grants to convert pavement into green spaces, plant trees and other vegetation and create drought-tolerant natural areas on school campuses. It will also fund activities that help children connect with nature.

“California is heading into a hotter, drier future and extreme heat will only become more dangerous. We’re taking action to protect our kids — especially in underserved communities — from hotter temperatures with our best defense: nature,” Newsom said.

The first round of funding for this initiative will provide an implementation grant to a project in the San Francisco Unified School District, and includes planning grants for schools in Contra Costa, Sonoma, Monterey, Santa Clara, and Alameda counties.

“Creating schoolyards where children can safely be outside, protected from extreme heat and surrounded by vegetation instead of concrete is something Cal Fire is proud to support, and is something every child should be able to experience at school where they learn and grow,” Cal Fire Director and Fire Chief Joe Tyler.

Should not Cal Fire stick to fire fighting?
OR is newsom raiding Cal Fire funds to make himself look presidential?
DEMs adept at USING children for political gain, wonder if it’s inbred in them.

Cal Fire did not contribute to anyone.
THESE ARE OUR TAX DOLLARS.

Margaret Thatcher once said that “The trouble with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.”

It’s taxpayer dollars, plain and simple. Enough of the BS and why is SF included in this?

Newsom is spending our tax dollars to make himself look better as a Presidential candidate.

That is wrong and unethical.

Gav never cared much for being ethical.

I guess it’s a wonder how people like me ever survived having to go to schools without air conditioning. This was the Mount Diablo School District in the 60s and 70s! We did just fine! We learned how to endure and tolerate! Now we can’t have our babies even break a sweat or let them feel uncomfortable or offended in any way. Sheesh! what a country we’re going to have with all these snowflakes that melt at a stare!

So… you never got air conditioning? Or, somewhere along the way decide that was a modern convenience that you wanted?

This is not right at all. I went to elementary School junior high and high School in the sweltering heat 100 degree plus days for months at a time no air conditioning we dealt with it we weren’t snowflakes we weren’t cry babies and we didn’t whine about it.
CalFire had no business donating that money to schools! I see what they are doing, watch what CalFire asked for next…

This is hilarious and completely nonsensible. Or, it would be hilarious if it was not taxpayer money being flushed down the toilet.

If Calfire has this much money to spend on stuff like this , we need to look at their budget. Bloated.

“Aren’t schools out for the summer???” There things missing here as it says “create surrounding vegetation” …….isn’t this what cal-fire tells us not to do? I am once again so totally confused.

After all the schools take their grant money and plant vegetation all around the buildings, there will be a major fire at one of them and then they will get grant money to “remove surrounding vegetation”.

It’s all one big scam.

Very ironic that San Francisco is listed by name. Daytime high today in San Francisco was a sweltering 68 degrees. Payola as usual.

Money Laundering 101. Cal Fire needs to focus on Prevention of WILDFIRES.
It appears they want to go the way of Bud Light instead.

Cal Fire is contributing almost $50 million to schools? Bizarre considering all the fire fighting they’ve had to do the last couple of years.

Ricardoh July 18, 2023 - 12:39 PM - 12:39 PM

Maybe Cal fire can buy a decent size air tanker with that money so fires like the one in yosemite don’t burn for weeks at a time. The point of this is summer and kids are home is a good one. The other is I went to school in Novato in the fifties and it was just as hot and we had no shade and we survived without a problem.

The Fearless Spectator July 18, 2023 - 5:34 PM - 5:34 PM

Newsom can’t take a dump without mentioning underserved communities.

Res July 18, 2023 - 7:56 PM - 7:56 PM

This would be great. They need to put up shade over the play structures. Planting more trees is a great idea, but then they need more water. School is back in session around the beginning of August. When I was young it was always after Labor Day. If it is too hot in August why don’t the schools push back the start time to Sept?
