It seems that Jim Jordan have been sending threathing phone calls, text (non violent at least) to some that are not voting for him. I understand that is his MO. Nice guy.

So let’s give some credit to those who made the mess too.

Wow. So a congressman who has never written nor passed any legislation in the 16 years he’s been in office, and who couldn’t be bothered to work with Democrats, was fit to be House Speaker?

I’m glad that Jim Jordan, the guy with a law degree but no law license who also happens to chair the House Judiciary Committee (must be an inside joke for the GOP), will never be Speaker. Losing three times must have been a huge blow to his outsized ego.

BEANZY,
.
There’s no requirement that one be a lawyer to be Chair, Majority Ranking Member, Minority Ranking Member, or to serve as a member of the House Judiciary Committee.
.
When Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa was running for reelection and his Democratic Party opponent ran on being a lawyer, because Iowans wouldn’t want a non-lawyer and farmer like Chuck Grassley to Chair the Senate Judiciary Committee, he lost making that argument.
.
Then again, one doesn’t have to have a law degree or be a lawyer to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court either. Frankly, that would be refreshing and healthy for the Court.

It’s wild that you think the Democrats should help the Republicans resolve their speaker issue. I don’t think you would expect the Republicans to vote for a Democrat speaker.

Democrats voted to oust McCarthy didn’t they?
Democrats aren’t willing to vote for a Republican, right?
So Democrats were willing to sponsor the problem but are unwilling to fix it.
Quit holding them blameless.

Not sure what you mean by being unwilling to solve the problem. They have voted in every round. In fact their candidate has gotten the most votes in every round.

When asked if they wanted to oust McCarthy, who gave them nothing they asked for, they voted to oust him.

When asked who the new speaker should be they unanimously chose their ideal candidate.

Which part of this do you think the Republicans would do differently?

‘Biden is dangling border security money to try to get billions more for Israel and Ukraine’
.
“President Joe Biden is trying to sweeten his pitch for more money for Ukraine by mixing in billions of dollars for securing the U.S.-Mexico border in the hope that it will bring more Republicans on board.
The idea came up late last month, after Ukraine assistance was stripped out of a stopgap measure to keep the government running due to growing Republican resistance to financing the war effort.” …
.
“It’s not at all clear that including roughly $14 billion in border money included as part of the the $106 billion spending package the White House sent to Congress on Friday will placate those who are resisting.”

“Peace through strength”. Those words from Ronald Reagan make me realize how during his term millions and millions of people were freed from communism. There was peace in the world and the Soviet Union was dissolving. All the while, the liberal left-wing at the time we’re all claiming that Ronald Reagan was trying to start World War 3. Do they maybe see how things really work now? No I think they won’t be happy until we’re involved in more worse in the world again. Most wars actually do break out during Democrat Administrations!

Chico October 22, 2023 - 5:28 PM - 5:28 PM

Oh plu-eaze! Stop already with the “life was great when Ronnie was prez.” He was the worst president ever:

Reagan’s shifting of domestic programs to defense caused the federal debt to triple from $998 billion to $2.8 Trillion under his watch.

He armed Saddam Hussein during the Iraq-Iran war even though Saddam was using chemical weapons in violation of international law.

He gave the CIA authority to establish the Nicaraguan Contra “Freedom Fighters”, and illegally supported and supplied weapons to them despite that they were killing civilians who had democratically elected a new government to overthrow the existing dictatorship.

On that subject, does the name Oliver North ring a bell? Iran-Contra Hearings? Selling guns to Iran and using the proceeds to arm the Contras?

Ronnie supported Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos even though Marcos killed his political rival and rigged his own election.

And this nugget: just days after the barracks bombing that killed 241 Marines in Beirut, Reagan decides the best way for the US to retaliate is to invade the tiny Caribbean island of Granda. Yeah, that showed them. Don’t mess around with the US.

He armed and supported the Mujahideen rebels in Afghanistan, who’s members, such as Osama Bin Laden, went on to form Al Qaeda.

And then of course, Ronnie supported the racist apartheid South African government. The US Congress passed a bill, the Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986 to put pressure on South Africa to end apartheid. Ronnie vetoed it. He vetoed it!! Thankfully, Congress was forced to override his veto.

I’m just getting started.

Remember the Farm Aid Concerts of 1985, 86, and 87? Mellancamp, Bon Jovi, Dylan, Neil? Those were good times, unless you happened to be a farmer. While rural America was in a crisis, good ole’ Ronnie vetoed a farm credit bill that would have given many farmers a bit of mortgage relief to help save their farms. In a discussion about the exportation of grain to other countries he joked “I’d like to keep the grain and export the farmers.” His was not a popular name in the midwest where I’m from.

Then there was that pesky little problem called AIDS. Nancy tried to get her husband to pay more attention, but even in 1986 when fatalities were doubling, he proposed cuts in funding for AIDS research. Swell guy.

Speaking of cuts, as a result of cutting taxes for the rich, the tax revenue in 1983 was so small that him and Alan Greenspan “borrowed” hundreds of billions – yes billions – of dollars from Social Security to pay the country’s bills. That money was never paid back! It was known as the Great Social Security Heist. He got away with that one.

Ronnie’s administration had more criminals on staff than Trump. Hard to believe. At least 138 Reagan officials, including cabinet members, were investigated, indicted, or convicted. Names like Sec of Interior James Watt, Atty General Edwin Messe, Sec of Defense Caspar Weinberger, Asst Sec of State Elliot Abrams; many were pardoned by Ronnie or Bush Sr.

I could go on, but in the end, nobody’s listening. You like what you remember and maybe those days were good for you. As for the rest of the country, not so much.

Cyn October 23, 2023 - 11:48 AM - 11:48 AM

@Chico
People are listening…..hard not to hear that axe grinding. You certainly showed that President Reagan was not perfect and I certainly cannot disagree with that; however, the reason Reagan armed Afghanistan was that they were fighting Russia. That’s just one important detail you left out, and believe me, you left out plenty. But with all those omissions, you somehow managed to include Trump. Everyone always has to include Trump, even when he has absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand. It never fails, and neither did you, Chico.

3
THE BLACK KNIGHT October 24, 2023 - 4:43 PM - 4:43 PM

CHICO,
.
President Reagan was hardly the “worst president ever.” Many liberal and progressive historians don’t even agree with you on that.
.
During the Reagan presidency, Republicans controlled the Senate for 6 of 8 years, and Democrats controlled the House for all 8-years. You should be putting quite a bit of blame on Congressional Democrats for certain things that happened during the Reagan administration. There would’ve been no tax reform without Democrat support. There would’ve been no social security reform without Democrat support. There would’ve been no increase in military spending without Democrat support. There would’ve been no increase in the deficit without Democrat support. There would’ve been no increase in the national debt without Democrat support.
.
You should be well aware how a presidents budget works by now, whether it’s AIDS funding or something else. They’re largely meaningless, because Congress sets spending, not the president. Presidential budgets are only good as a possible negotiating tool in order to avoid a presidential veto.
.
“Tax revenue in 1983 was so small…” isn’t exactly true, it was down by about 2.5% for one year because of the recession, before rebounding the following year and each subsequent year.
.
If President Reagan supported the South African government, why would he have had his own sanctions against South Africa? Congress wasn’t “forced” to override his presidential veto of the Anti- Apartheid Act, they chose to override his veto. His veto had to do with a difference of opinion with Congress based on seperation of powers, policy, and who controlled foreign policy, the president or congress.
.
Since the U.S. became a superpower we’ve funded and supplied our allies, at the time, with the necessary money and materials to fight, and possibly win, proxy wars. This wasn’t limited to President Reagan, but includes Presidents and Congressmembers of both parties.
.
If the Reagan name was so unpopular in the midwest, how was it that Ronald Reagan was able to carry all of the midwestern states, with the exception or Minnesota, in both the 1980 and 1984 elections? I was actually farming and ranching in the west during the 1980s, where I witnessed great support for Reagan. While President Reagan did veto the Farm Credit Bill on spending grounds, the Democrats that pushed the bill through Congress with the help of their Republican supporters, chose not to attempt an override of the veto.
.
All Presidents and each Congress after President Reagan, Democrat and/or Republican have not changed anything with the federal government using social security funds. The federal government does payback borrowed social security funds with interest in years when the social security trust fund runs a deficit.
.
Again, you should well know that it’s the standard operating procedure of presidents in office to pardon cabinet officials, appointed officials, and those who have personal relationships with the President who have been convicted of crimes relating to his administration. If the Reagan presidency had not occurred so soon after Watergate then fewer administration officials would’ve been charged and/or convicted. Those convictions were a result of historical timing and criminalizing politics. This is also why members of Congress from both parties chose not to renew the Independent Counsel statute years later.

Shout out to META CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan. They started the CZI ( Chan Zuckerberg Initiative) where they funnel millions of dollars to left-wing causes. Some of their donations included: $2.5 million to Solidare-a group that seeks to do away with believe it or not POLICING! Another $3 million went to PolicyLink-an organization behind DefundPolice.org CZI has also played a role in stripping away $18 million from Oakland Police Department. CZI claims to diminish the role of policing in communities of color and look to empower alternative visions for public safety, but believe it or not they have yet to name what the alternatives might be in their funding. What is so odd is that Mark Zuckerberg will spend approximately $14 million on his own private security detail in 2023. Considered to be one of the most hated people in America-its probably a good thing for him and his family. I would love to see this weasel walk around San Francisco without his security personnel. It’s rumored he only hires ex-Secret Service Agents. My question is what are him and his wife up to? Nothing can compare to his $400 million that he put into two nonprofits which help various government election offices around the U.S. To date these funds did not violate campaign finance laws. 🤔 Now you know who us trying to rule you. When you are worth about $110 billion, you can have a lot of influence.

There is a program on TV about border crossing places and the fight to find contraband. There’s so many ways of getting drugs into the US it makes your head spin. One of my favorites was a 40 foot trailer filled to the top with carrots. The bags of carrots were placed on wooden skids. All of the skids were hollow and filled with drugs. Trucks coming into the country are line up for miles. That’s why I say close the whole bloody border.

“We Americans are slow to anger. We always seek peaceful avenues before resorting to the use of force — and we did. We tried quiet diplomacy, public condemnation, economic sanctions, and demonstrations of military force. None succeeded. Despite our repeated warnings, Qadhafi continued his reckless policy of intimidation, his relentless pursuit of terror. He counted on America to be passive. He counted wrong. I warned that there should be no place on Earth where terrorists can rest and train and practice their deadly skills. I meant it. I said that we would act with others, if possible, and alone if necessary to ensure that terrorists have no sanctuary anywhere. Tonight, we have.
Thank you, and God bless you.”

This is the type of American leadership that the world needs. Lay down the rules and then enforce your red lines. People stay in their lane when they know that their actions will result in severe consequences.

To Do List October 22, 2023 - 12:41 PM - 12:41 PM

Hanne’s comment is factually correct but highly deceptive. The far Right you mention are small and generally irrelevant extremist groups having little or no real impact on anything, while the antisemitism on the Left includes public statements by leading Democrat members of Congress (the whole Squad as they call themselves) in addition to actions such as boycotting the Israeli president’s speech to Congress last July. Antisemitism on the Right is marginal while in the Left it is part of their agenda. It also leads into some really twisted propaganda where the alphabet media tries to smear Trump with that label because he had dinner with someone, and compare that to Talib refusing to condemn beheading babies.

RUNDOG,
.
The “one person (man/woman), one vote” rule, created by the US Supreme Court in the 1960s, that reversed 175+ years of precedence, has absolutely nothing to do with the number of times a resident, citizen, or representative votes, it has to do with the apportionment of legislative districts being “subjectively” close to equal in population. This “rule” should be reversed on decision or by a constitutional amendment.
.
We were better represented our first 175 years, when we were able to use the “little federalism” model of apportionment in our state legislatures, where we were represented by the existing geographical boundaries of the counties. State upper house districts could return to being based on equal at-large representation districts drawn on individual existing geographical county lines. State lower house districts would be based on population and limited within the existing geographical boudaries of individual counties and limiting any gerrymandering of districts within individual counties. US House seats should be drawn much the same way without the strict adherence to population size we’re currently bound by.

*Mileage Tax – $900-1400 annually for average of 15k mileage per year (on top of car tax and gas taxes)
*Utility Rate Tax – $1200 per year more for the “pay based on your income” scheme being imposed next year
*Property Assessment – if they reset your home’s value to market rate, the impact will be roughly $4-12k per year depending on when you purchased your house

Just for fun clicking on the fbi link you will see one was born in California, one in Texas, one in Kentucky and one in Arizona. Since you claim that only two didn’t need to cross the border, tell us which two of these four states you consider not being part of the US?

Here is the list:
Cardenas: Place of birth California
Carias: Place of birth San Pedro Sula, Cortes, Honduras
Patel: Place of birth Kantrodi Ta Viramgam, Gujarat, India
Fields: Place of birth Kentucky
Ignatova: Place of birth Bulgaria
Villegas-Palomina: Place of birth Curumani, Colombia
Castillo: Place of birth Arizona
Flores: Place of birth Honduras
Jimenez: Place of birth Texas
Villareal-Hernandez: Place of birth Mexico

So, you really want to talk about math challenged? Maybe ask somebody to help you count but as I previously stated four of the ten are born in California, Arizona, Kentucky and Texas.

It’s just amazing how some people cannot accept that they are wrong.

To Do List October 24, 2023 - 11:09 AM - 11:09 AM

Whoa whoa whoa. Slow down, reality calling. I’m late to the party here but half of the FBI Most Wanted List is foreign born, but because someone disagrees with the exact percent it’s OK??? It is not OK. This is ridiculous that half are immigrants and is an important piece of data showing why we should be controlling the borders.

7
2
JWB October 24, 2023 - 12:15 PM - 12:15 PM

Please provide your support that the borders are not controlled. If you believe the fact that six of the 10 FBI most wanted individuals are foreign born, supports that the borders are NOT controlled, you need to provide the information about how, where and when these individuals entered the US otherwise your statement is useless.

The Professor October 24, 2023 - 1:08 PM - 1:08 PM

I’m so tired of you splitting hairs, JWB. If you really want to go down the semantics rabbit hole, then think about this. TDL did NOT say that the border was NOT controlled. Likewise, he did NOT say that the border was controlled. He just said that “we should be controlling the borders”.

Maybe he thinks that the border is NOT controlled and therefore we need to start doing a better job. Maybe he thinks that the border IS controlled and is applauding our government’s efforts. Either way, YOOU are jumping to conclusions regarding his statement. Foreign born or domestically born doesn’t change the fact that people on the Most Wanted List are bad hombres.

I will say that if the foreign born are here legally, then we need to do a better job of vetting who we let in. If they are here illegally, then we need to do a better job at the border.

7
3
JWB October 24, 2023 - 3:10 PM - 3:10 PM

Come on you and me both know what TDL meant to say and he actually did confirm this actually before you wrote your post (but it was not public).
.
But on the substance of your post. I do agree. First nobody in their right mind would argue for NOT controlling the border. But as an open society we can not always prevent bad people from doing bad things. Even the foreign born ones on the list we don’t know when they came into the US. Some might have come legally or as visitors overstaying their visa a very long time ago. Maybe some came across more recently. Obviously, we can all agree that we need to do a good job vetting them but how can you be vetting if somebody might become a criminal decades later? I note on that list are foreign born people from India, Eastern Europe and Latin America. Maybe they came as children of families or maybe they came as visitors. You cannot just close the border to Indians, Eastern Europeans or Latin Americans because they or their children might turn out to be criminals.

I didn’t mention any president but as long as you did it is getting worse with each. I suppose I could argue the Democrats waged a campaign during Trump to intentionally make it worse but that’s besides the point. What is frustrating is the moral cowardice and authoritarian narcissism for the Biden administration to pursue a country changing agenda of mass migration without an honest dialog with America as to why.

JWB,
.
Considering the apprehension and expulsion numbers you provided were higher in 2019, during the Trump administration, than in 2009, during the Obama administration, so wouldn’t the argument actually be that President Trump controlled the border better than President Obama because the apprehension and expulsion numbers were higher during the Trump administration?
