A second man has died from a shooting in Pleasant Hill on Tuesday that police say was prompted by an attempted robbery that led to the suspect and victim shooting each other.

Officers responded shortly before noon Tuesday to reports of a shooting near Twinbridge Circle near Longbrook Way.

Police found two men with multiple gunshot wounds. Both were taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek where one, 63-year-old Peter Popovich of Pleasant Hill, died Tuesday.

The second man, identified as 21-year-old resident San Pablo resident Trevon Davis, later also died of his injuries, police said Wednesday.

Investigators say Popovich worked in the legal cannabis industry. The company he worked for sells packaging materials for the legal distribution and sales of cannabis. Earlier in the day, Popovich worked as a delivery driver to other cannabis distributors.

Police say Popovich was likely targeted for robbery by Davis and at least one other suspect while he was standing near his van parked on Twinbridge Circle.

Both the suspects and Popovich were armed, leading to an exchange of gunfire.

The other suspect fled the scene and police haven’t released any description of the person. Popovich had a concealed carry permit and used his own gun in the shootout.

Witnesses said they saw a vehicle fleeing the scene but a description of the vehicle was not immediately available.

Any person with information related to this crime is encouraged to contact the Pleasant Hill Police Investigations Bureau at (925) 288-4630.

FINALLY, a CCW holder stopped a armed suspect. Although he lost his life, he probably saved others from this uncontrollable crime wave. The real hero is the Sheriff or Chief of Police whom issued him a CCW,

No, the CoCoCo Sheriff Livingston is NOT a friend of the 2A and only issued CCW licenses to his personal posse. He recently began to issue only because he absolutely had to due to the Bruen decision by SCOTUS in June 2022. And, it took him forever to do so.

Up until that time, he denied most everybody who applied.

Amazing that 27 (maybe 28?) states are
Constitutional carry ie. if you are legally able to own a gun, you can legally carry it for self defense. California among other states continue to strangle hold legal gun owners and law abiding citizens.

I know we’re supposed to believe that the marijuana industry is a decent one…. but “Pot Head” is a term that has been earned. A lot of violence has followed the industry even though it’s been legalized now. Not so sure it’s good for society.

All that matters is politicians getting their cut thru campaign contributions.
A total of $31,013,416.87 in advertising to get Prop 64 passed.
One of the claims made, proposition would decrease black market and drug cartel activity.
Illegal pot sales are higher now than before Prop 64.

“Excessive alcohol use was responsible for about 178,000 deaths in the United States each year during 2020–2021, or 488 deaths per day. ” https://www.cdc.gov/alcohol/features/excessive-alcohol-deaths.html

Cannabis deaths per year? zero.

Anything worth big money will have criminal elements interested in it. Look at the olive oil industry, which is very mobbed up.

In soft on crime CoCo county, am surprised pot delivery robberies don’t happen more often.
This being DEMafornia, criminals assumed driver would be an unarmed and a soft target.
Surprise ! ! ! they thought WRONG.
To bad he didn’t give the other one a dirt nap.

.
Sen. Scott Wiener’s only concern would be whether the pot was properly taxed.
.
He and anyone who supports State-sanctioned marijuana sales is complicit in permissive laws and
the resulting deaths.
.
Pot makes people stupid. Perhaps thats why Dems work hard to keep people ignorant and apathetic.

One of the benefits touted for legal cannabis was that it would end cannabis related crimes…

@Original G – I’d assume pot delivery robberies happen all the time. That’s why Popovich able to get a CCW and was carrying. This incident got in the news as both subjects were wounded and then died.

This incident is also an example of why CCW does not work. The robbers know dispensary delivery drivers are likely to be armed. Yet, that did not deter them, and likely were more prepared for someone to be pulling a gun. Had Popovich left his weapon concealed and holstered and given the robbers a burn bag of junk then everyone would have walked away satisfied with the transaction. While an idiot robber waving a weapon around is a concern there never was an imminent threat to Popovich’s life or safety. If Popovich chose to draw and fire then he would need to invent an imminent threat to life pretext.

Dispensaries could also make things safer by installing a vending machine in the delivery van that are controlled remotely by someone in the dispensary. The driver goes to the customer. The dispensary sees that on the GPS tracker and releases the customer’s order. If robbers try to steal the van then the dispensary hits the kill switch.

The vending machine does not need to be armored but make them tough enough that it’ll take a few minutes to either remove the machine or rip it apart.

Ah yes, the old “roll over for criminals so no one gets hurt” argument.

This kind of logic is EXACTLY why we are in the deep lawless hole we are in. Maintaining a civilization requires responsibility and risk. Those aren’t obligations we get to just pawn off on the police, we are all obligated to pitch in.

The idea of requiring pot drivers to spend ridiculous amounts of money to make their vans more criminal proof is extra icing on the cake. Say, why is everything locked up in the stores? It must be Target’s fault!

Popovich is a hero, and people like you voted to create the conditions that lead to his death. Shame on you.
