Oakland Airport Considering Name Change To “San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport”

The Port of Oakland will consider changing the name of the city’s airport to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport from the current official title of Metropolitan Oakland International Airport.

While the airport code would remain OAK, the new name would “boost inbound travelers’ geographic awareness of the airport’s location on the San Francisco Bay,” Port Commission President Barbara Leslie said in a statement Friday.

The airport has lost routes, including 39 of 54 that were added from July 2008 to March 2024, Interim Director of Aviation Craig Simon said.

“Market research and interviews with airline partners have shown that routes have not performed as well as they should have due to the lack of geographic awareness, making air carriers reluctant to sustain and add new routes in Oakland,” he said.

Rechristening the airport would protect 30,000 direct jobs and $1.6 billion in economic impact on the region, Leslie said.

The port’s commissioners will consider the name change at their April 11 meeting.

It’s because Oakland is in the name, not because travelers don’t know where it is, the problem is they DO know where it is. More ramifications of a terrible liberal run craphole of a city and state.

Exactly! OAK has a long and prosperous history. When first built, it had the longest runway in the WORLD at 7,020 Ft. What is wrong with OAK is Oakland’s DEI style Management. …. and the fact that it is at the “bullets flying” intersection of Hegenberger and 73rd, and you have to drive through that to get to the nearest “bullets flying even faster” MacArthur Freeway! And…she appears to be a professional DEI political dingbat.

Well, California renamed food stamps as ‘CalFresh’… maybe they can renamed Oakland as “FreshOak. See, liberals think you could fool people by just changing the name.. reputation always catches up. Oakland’s got issues all cause by the city leaders, yet they’re oblivious to it all and have no clue on how to fix it, but rather than admit the obvious failure, go even further and more decisively down the bad failed path. That’s lunacy. And that’s what liberals seem to do best.

Yet they continue to ignore the crime in the area.

I think they call this putting lipstick on a pig.

But, putting the name or the words San Francisco in the title could cause substantial confusion for international travelers.

The FAA designation for that Airport is OAK. That designation is difficult to change.

People can name the place anything they want.

I’d suggest Getto International Airport.

Most name changes are dumb and/or costly for residents and businesses (Funston Playground to Moscone; Army Street to Caeser Chavez Blvd) but this one takes the cake. How about Oakland International Airport on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay, south of Treasure Island and near Alameda. Or just leave it the hell alone! Oakland International Airport sats it all.

Leave it up to the libs to make a superficial change in a futile attempt to disguise their fundamental failings. You can put lipstick on a pig and call it Gertrude, but it’s still a pig.
Oakland is losing business because of their soft on crime policies.

LAZY K,
.
The Bay Point of today was first known as Bella Vista, which included the areas known as McAvoy and Ambrose, then it became West Pittsburg, before being rebranded as Bay Point about 30 years ago, while the name Bay Point was the original name for the town of Port Chicago, before it was rebranded as Port Chicago during the Great Depression.

THE BLACK KNIGHT March 31, 2024 - 10:10 PM - 10:10 PM

DD,
.
I believe Shore Acres is the name of one of the oldest, if not the oldest, subdivisions in Bay Point. However, I do remember seeing several old maps with “Shore Acres” shown on the maps as though “Shore Acres” was a town or city, because we don’t normally see subdivisions on street maps. These older maps and some current maps also show the areas of “McAvoy” and “Ambrose,” which had more to do with the railroads in the area 100+ years ago.

It’s the easiest airport in the Bay Area to fly in and out of and the closest to Claycord. I have flown in and out of OAK probably well over 200 times, including this past January. SJC is almost as user friendly, but it’s farther away from here. Note that they recently changed the name of SJC from Mineta San Jose International Airport to San Jose Mineta International Airport because most people had no idea who Norman Mineta was and were somewhat confused about where the airport was.

Oakland has or is about to hit rock bottom, so hopefully sanity will prevail and it will begin to turn around. Leave the name alone.
