Stores throughout Contra Costa County have lost thousands of shopping carts throughout the years due to theft. Each cart costs between $200 – $700, depending on the cart.
QUESTION: Do you think the local authorities should crack down on shopping cart theft?

They hardly enforce our shoplifting laws, so how can we expect them to enforce shopping cart theft? It’s too bad because it places an extra burden on stores when they have to lock up their merchandise, and inconvenience their honest customers. What I find annoying is when a store has that ridiculous pole sticking up from the back of the cart to prevent the customer from removing it from the store. That pole gets in the way, and if I buy a lot of items or something heavy, I want to be able to take the cart out to my car.
On another note, OJ died yesterday!!! Karma always wins in the end.
I’m not sure it was Karma that allowed him to die at 76 years old surrounded by family and friends.

Authorities should crack down on all theft.
That would be great but we have a miserable excuse for a district attorney that thinks stealing should tolerated if the thief really has a need for the stuff (expensive purses, designer shoes, fancy tv’s, high end booze, etc)
Until most people decide to make common sense great again, we will all suffer the consequences of being complicit in our downfall, what a legacy for our children, right?

The shops already try to stop cart theft. Some have a lock that the checkout person has to deactivate so you can take the cart out to your car. Others have a simple drag thing that doesn’t do much. Some have a zone control that locks wheels past a certain point. And I keep seeing carts left on streets and sidewalks anyhow. Just what would the authorities do? Give someone a ticket? Take them to the station, slap their hands, and let them go?

No. The authorities don’t even have the resources to crackdown more valuable thefts (like cars, high end bikes, ect)
Sure…. but what about everything else they should be cracking down on? … and solving serious crimes – it can’t be the hot button of the week
If it costs the store money the consumers will wind up paying for it & allowing a little bit of crime means allowing a little more & a little more and a little more and…..
Yes. 1. Theft is theft. It is a crime. 2. Shopping carts are expensive. Theft of carts drives up prices at those stores from where they are stolen.
Back before they put anti-theft locking devices on the wheels, litterally every cart in our store was taken over the course of a few days. We had an outside company that would go around and pick them up on a flatbed and return them. They all ended up at the nearby apartments, where people would abandon them when finished. This is an old problem, and honestly not nearly as bad now as it used to be due to newer countermeasures.
The wider issue is that we have become a society of anarcho-tyranny, where some crimes are ignored, while others are enforced with zeal, and still others are unwritten but carry huge consequences for violating. Steal $800 from Dicks, no biggie. Burn rubber on a rainbow Pride crosswalk, maximum prosecution and sentencing. Correctly sex a transgendered person, lose your job and possibly even your bank account.
The commies have to be stopped, but people don’t even realize they are in a civilizational war.
ALL theft should be prosecuted. Our woke DA, Diane Soros, will never do that. These pro-homeless “advocates” should return all carts they come across.

How about we turn our focus toward actual crime? There is a litany of issues affecting Claycord that one would, hopefully, deem more important to address than shopping carts being stolen.

By all means, “crack down on shopping cart theft” while allowing illegals to invade our state; make sure to vote for and then permit (handpicked by G Soros) district attorneys to prosecute citizens for thought crimes and jaywalking but allow people who murder, steal and destroy private property and loot stores “if they need what they steal” to run foot loose and fancy free, it makes absolute sense, right?

Come up with a system where you need to put a deposit on a shopping cart. When returned you get your deposit back. If the carts cost 200 and you can’t afford the deposit then buy your own cart. You can buy them everywhere.
There already is such as system. Been to Dollar Tree lately. They’ve had that for several years.
I did wonder how low the IQ of some chains management were it taking away the little baskets. That annoyed people. I looked up how little they cost wholesale and wondered how much they were losing in additional sales if someone wanted to pick up a few things and might also grab a few other things but didn’t because they had to carry everything in their hands. It must’ve been enough because those baskets eventually appeared again.
But since it is generally the lazy good-for-nothing homeless stealing these, what are they going to do? When you choose not to work, use a bunch of drugs, steal daily from stores, and camp on the sidewalk, you somehow become a protected class. Of course they would not do anything about them stealing carts and driving up prices for the rest of us.

If you want to go after them, make sure the cart is worth more than $950. Otherwise,
