Dhruv Subramanian, a 7th grader at Windemere Ranch Middle School in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District, is one of three students from the Bay Area who will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee the week of Memorial Day in National Harbor, Maryland.
Dhruv placed third in the Bay Area Scripps Regional Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Rotary Club of San Ramon Valley. Students from schools in San Jose placed first and second in the contest. The regional competition covered 11 Bay Area counties with a total of 210 elementary and middle schools participating; 46 spellers advanced to the regional competition.
In addition to competing at the National Bee, Dhruv will represent Contra Costa County in the California State Junior High Spelling Bee. Benjamin Bress, a fifth grader at Del Rey Elementary School in the Orinda Union School District, placed in the top 10 at the regional contest and will represent Contra Costa County in the California State Elementary Spelling Bee. The state competitions will be held in Stockton on May 13.
“Congratulations to Dhruv and Benjamin for their success at the regional spelling bee,” Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools Lynn Mackey said. “It is an honor for spellers to make it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee and to represent this county at the state competition. I also want to thank the Rotary Club of San Ramon Valley for stepping up to sponsor this important academic competition and giving this county’s students a pathway to shine on the brightest stage.”
The Scripps National Bee is the nation’s largest and longest-running educational program, having launched in 1925. The program reaches millions of students across the country and in other parts of the world with the classroom materials it provides to schools.
The national competition semifinals will take place on May 31, with the finals televised on ION and Bounce on June 1, 2023.
