The union representing San Francisco’s deputy sheriffs demanded assistance Saturday from the California National Guard to solve a critical staffing shortage in the county’s jails.
The demand, in a letter to the sheriff, the mayor and the president of the board of supervisors, cited escalating prisoner violence and injuries to deputies and civilians who work in the jails.
“In 2023 alone, there were 240 reported incidents of prisoner fights, representing a 58% increase from the previous year,” said Ken Lomba, the president of the San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs’ Association.
In addition to serving as jail guards, deputies provide security to city hall and county courts.
Lomba said the National Guard could temporarily supplement current staffing levels.
“Their presence is crucial to provide immediate relief and enhance the safety and security of our facilities for all personnel and inmates,” he said in the letter posted on the union’s website.
The jail’s inmate population stood at 1,137 as of Friday, according to the sheriff’s department’s website.
An announcement on the website on Saturday said visits to inmates by members of the community and parent-child visits were cancelled through Monday.
The county operates jails in downtown San Francisco and in San Bruno, in San Mateo County.

Wow, now they care. Maybe the sheriff should have cared when the city and state was gutting everything for their little social experiments instead of selling their friends and families lives down the river for a little overtime.
Democrats take all the tax money from everything and give it to their nonprofit structures to create social problems that never get fixed in exchange for voting blocs. It’s a big circle of money and taxpayers get screwed on everything. Free rent for trans people just for being transvestite drug addicts, crumbling roads and diminishing police services for us.

Considering DEMs releasing of convicted felons from state prisons. They’ve closed three prisons so far plus overcrowding causing early releases from county jails in all 58 CA counties who is going to keep us safe???
For higher prices, more homeless, more drugs and more crime elect DEMs.
They close prisons to save that money and use it to buy votes. It’s real simple. They hate us.

There is no California Police Officer Standards and Training “patrol” certificate. You are either a peace officer under 832 PC or you are not. All deputy sheriffs in all 58 counties in California are sworn peace officers pursuant to 832 PC.
The reason why the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office does not have patrol responsibilities is because San Francisco is the only consolidated city-county in California. They use a strong Mayor style of Government which meaning police services are provided by city Police and not County Deputies.
SFSO law enforcement responsibilities are limited to provide Court Security, security at City Hall and maintain a jail(s).
