California Fourth Graders And Their Families Will Have Free Access To State Parks

California will soon offer free annual passes to 19 state parks for fourth-grade students and their families.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 148 Thursday, establishing the California State Park Adventure Pass program. The program is scheduled to begin by Sept. 21.

The federal government has the Every Kid Outdoors Program, which allows families with fourth graders free access to federal parks.

Earlier this month Newsom signed legislation approving $5.6 million to fund the parks program, as well as an additional $3 million to establish the State Library Park Pass, which allows individuals to check out a day-use state park pass from a library for free.

OK, I have a few questions, why only fourth graders? Why not all kids? How does a kid prove he or she is in the fourth grade? How many family members are allowed with the fourth grader? Why only 19 state parks? Federal and State parks should be free to everybody anyway, we pay enough taxes.

Well Folks July 26, 2021 - 6:09 PM - 6:09 PM

They use to teach Calif history in 4th grade so if that is still the case there may be some sort of tie-in

Anon July 26, 2021 - 6:10 PM - 6:10 PM

It is because 4th grade is when students study California and it’s history. I’m sure this means it is free to take 4th graders on field trips to CA state parks with their schools. Not sure why only 19 though,

Mac N Cheese July 26, 2021 - 4:32 PM - 4:32 PM

Boy this guys working overtime lately! Just imagine if he put that much effort into fixing the real problems California faces. He probably wouldn’t be facing a recall. Too bad California doesn’t get leaders who really are interested in making California great again. It’s shamefull what Dems have done to this state.

Cellophane July 26, 2021 - 4:43 PM - 4:43 PM

Every day it’s a new giveaway program.

Did anyone hear the ad demeaning the Republicans and trumpeting the greaseball?

I wonder why he’s so scared?

He’s got the Dominion computers and mail-in ballots.

How could he possibly lose?

WC July 26, 2021 - 5:15 PM - 5:15 PM

The bribery to vote for Gavin using your tax dollars never ends.

ConcordRez July 26, 2021 - 5:43 PM - 5:43 PM

Fourth grade is the year kids study CA history. When my youngest was in 5th grade, I became a Webelos leader. The teacher loved it because I took the boys on many educational outings re: the state to earn badges and contributed findings to the classroom do that all could benefit. I’m not a CA native; therefore, it was a learning experience for me

Well Folks July 26, 2021 - 6:13 PM - 6:13 PM

I was wondering if kids were still taught CA history in 4th grade. Thanks for the confirmation. I figured if CA history is still taught in 4th grade then there is the tie-in
And I think it is great you took the Webelos on educational outring and encouraged them to share their findings with their fellow classmates

Oh, please July 26, 2021 - 9:53 PM - 9:53 PM

I don’t think they teach this anymore in most CA public schools. They are too busy pushing moronic agendas and brainwashing kids.

ConcordRez July 27, 2021 - 9:25 PM - 9:25 PM

Typo. I meant Webelos in 4th grade

Badge1104 July 26, 2021 - 5:47 PM - 5:47 PM

I too, wonder why only fourth graders and their families?
Could it be that Gavin Newsom’s political campaign figured out that those are the target parents he wants to get to vote for him?
Or is he going to next propose that fourth graders should be able to vote?

Well Folks July 26, 2021 - 6:10 PM - 6:10 PM

ranchgirl July 27, 2021 - 6:45 AM - 6:45 AM

It mirrors the Federal program, which offers free access to National Parks to families with 4th graders.

Bdpirate July 26, 2021 - 5:52 PM - 5:52 PM

Well it’s either this outing or teaching them what didn’t happen in the last 150 years that’s being erased.

Martinezmike July 26, 2021 - 6:01 PM - 6:01 PM

They should also have free lunches provided by the French Laundry. (but nothing too starchy)

Snakekeeper July 26, 2021 - 6:14 PM - 6:14 PM

Have them take rake leaves!

Dr. Jellyfinger July 26, 2021 - 9:43 PM - 9:43 PM

Well whadaya know…… Snak Keeper fixed his name!

wesley mouch July 26, 2021 - 6:29 PM - 6:29 PM

His polling numbers are declining among fourth graders!🤪🤪🤪

Garbear July 26, 2021 - 6:51 PM - 6:51 PM

There he goes again, trying to buy votes for his recall in September

The Fearless Spectator July 26, 2021 - 7:24 PM - 7:24 PM

Newsom must have polled poorly in the “parents with fourth graders and up” metric. Hence the effort to purchase additional votes.

Phil July 26, 2021 - 8:04 PM - 8:04 PM

First, second, third, fifth, and sixth graders need not apply? Seems very arbitrary. What a useless tool, our governor Grease Head

ConcordRez July 27, 2021 - 9:27 PM - 9:27 PM

4th-grade curriculum covers CA history

HappyPappy July 26, 2021 - 9:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Why is gov Newsance signing anything involving FEDERAL PARKS, and why does it cost 5.6 million to let people in FREE?
This doesn’t pass the smell test.

ConcordRez July 27, 2021 - 9:28 PM - 9:28 PM

The headline reads “State Parks.”

Chris July 26, 2021 - 9:03 PM - 9:03 PM

Oh that’s why…One of Gavin’s kids is in grade 4. How stupid of me. I think this is unfair toward the people of color, the marginalized, and the economically disadvantaged.

Fred July 27, 2021 - 8:09 AM - 8:09 AM

It’s obvious- he’s running scared and trying to buy votes.

But the left is too stupid to see it.

Parent July 26, 2021 - 9:09 PM - 9:09 PM

Buying my votes Newsom?
Running scared?

Jessica July 27, 2021 - 5:50 AM - 5:50 AM

4th graders have had this opportunity for quite a few years at least, this isn’t the first year. The state parks have offered this to 4th graders because California history is taught in 4th grade.

WC---Creeker July 27, 2021 - 11:00 AM - 11:00 AM

The parks should be free for all no matter age, race, sexual orientation or religion. Vote for me!

Teacher July 27, 2021 - 3:01 PM - 3:01 PM

This has been the case for several years and is nothing new. The reason is that 4th grade is when kids are taught CA history in school. Annual passes are also good for life if you are a senior.

ChuckStir July 27, 2021 - 6:15 PM - 6:15 PM

Newsom will do anything to save his skin

Nick July 27, 2021 - 9:59 PM - 9:59 PM

I remember that the state parks used to be free. Then they started charging for entry and such. Maybe we can go back to how it used to be (given how much taxes we pay)?
