Claycord Donut Wars – Dunkin’ Donuts – Has The Local King Been Dethroned By An East Coast Legend?

Up next in our installment of the Claycord Donut Wars is Dunkin’ Donuts, located at 4383 Clayton Rd. in Concord (the old Hollywood Video building).

Dunkin’ is new(er) to the area compared to other donut shops, having been in business in Concord for a little over four years.

Here’s our recap.

Dunkin’ is surprisingly good. Not the best, but definitely not the worst. The positive is they have a good selection of donuts during the morning and afternoon, but the negative is they don’t make the donuts on site. Even though they don’t make the donuts on site, they still taste fresh, and are lighter than other more traditional donut shops. If you’re looking for big donuts, this probably isn’t the place for you, but they will provide a quick dozen or two in a pinch when other donut shops are closed. They also offer a wide variety of other items on the menu, including their World-famous coffee.

Six donuts at Dunkin’ cost $8.99, which is much cheaper than Krispy Kreme and Donut King in Pleasant Hill, but more expensive than King’s in Concord.

To compare, Krispy Kreme was $14.94 for six, King’s in Concord was $7.50 for six (including bars), and although they say you can get six at Donut King in Pleasant Hill for $9.50, we paid $11.88 for six.

They’re open until the evening hours, and they take credit/debit cards and other forms of payment, which is a plus.

They didn’t give any extras. So far, King’s in Concord is the only place that gave us a few free donut holes with our order.

The owner of this franchise is local, but the company is based back east. They also have a donut shop in Walnut Creek, on Newell Ave.

We give Dunkin’ 3 out of 5 donut holes.

CLAYCORD DONUT WARS SCORECARD (donut holes = stars):

  • Dunkin Donuts in Concord gets 3 out of 5 donut holes
  • Donut King in Pleasant Hill gets 3 out of 5 donut holes
  • King’s in Concord gets 4 out of 5 donut holes.
  • Krispy Kreme in Concord gets 1.5 out of 5 donut holes.

OVERALL LEADER = KING’S IN CONCORD

(ratings are based on location, hours, customer service, cost, selection, taste of donut, extras)

The Claycord Donut Wars will continue next week.

Why is KK only getting 1.5 donut holes? Is it price?

CLAYCORD.com January 9, 2023 - 1:38 PM - 1:38 PM

KK is price, taste, location, customer service. All not great.

At least KK makes their donuts in house. It’s insane how many people like DD, it’s literally freezer donuts and cheap coffee..

NoMoreFreeRide January 9, 2023 - 1:27 PM - 1:27 PM

Donut King by far the best!

No. Dunkin’ Donuts, like most commercial brands, is mass-produced garbage. Think about it. McDonalds isn’t the best burger and Starbucks isn’t the best coffee. The best things in life can’t be on every corner.

A dangerous job, but someones gotta do it! By the end of this survey, the mayor will risk gainimg 25lbs, and becoming pre-diabetic. 😛🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩

CLAYCORD.com January 9, 2023 - 1:39 PM - 1:39 PM

@Martinezmike – lol, I might have to hire some donut tasters 🙂

Bluebird January 9, 2023 - 9:19 PM - 9:19 PM

I would apply as a donut taste tester. I love cinnamon rolls and think mine are the best.

Huskerfan January 9, 2023 - 1:42 PM - 1:42 PM

How about Happy Donuts on Monument blvd and Chick’s donuts in Park N Shop. The maple bars at Chick’s are some of the best I have ever had.

CLAYCORD.com January 9, 2023 - 1:45 PM - 1:45 PM

Happy Donuts is probably next. Or one in Martinez. Not sure yet. Chicks will be in a few weeks. 🙂

Cowellian January 9, 2023 - 1:55 PM - 1:55 PM

Chick’s Apple Fritters are on my list of things I really miss from the Claycord area.

Cowellian January 9, 2023 - 1:45 PM - 1:45 PM

I discovered Dunkin’ Donuts when I was stationed in Groton, CT, when they were open late and made fresh doughnuts in the store. My favorite has always been the Boston Kremes. In Boston, there are more Dunkin’s than Starbucks, and I’ve even seen a Dunkin across the street from another Dunkin.
Some of us are old enough to remember Time to make the doughnuts!

Let’s be clear here, there are only two major food groups
SUGAR and COFFEE.

There’s a reason they’re called The Best Little Donut House In Town. Cheaper, better. Don’t overlook Concord’s gem!

There is also Best Little Donut House in Town. I haven’t been there for a long time but I remember they would include a handful of donut holes in the box.

Love Kings Donuts!

I used to pass Best Little Donut House on the way to work. If we were going to have a meeting, I’d stop in and pick up a dozen.

nytemuvr January 9, 2023 - 2:38 PM - 2:38 PM

Does anyone remember back in the late 60s there used to be a Dunkin Donuts where Way Back Burgers on Clayton Rd. is now? When that little strip mall opened there was DD with Kragen’s next to it. I know Kragen’s was there as the “anchor” store and pretty sure the donut shop next to it was a DD. Anyone?

CLAYCORD.com January 9, 2023 - 2:42 PM - 2:42 PM

@nytemuvr – that was Winchell’s donuts.

nytemuvr January 9, 2023 - 3:15 PM - 3:15 PM

@CLAYCORD.COM….You’re right. We had moved across town and remember it wasn’t as good as Chick’s so my family didn’t go there and would drive back downtown to Chick’s.

CLAYCORD.com January 9, 2023 - 3:23 PM - 3:23 PM

Winchell’s had the best Coke with crushed ice 🙂

nytemuvr January 9, 2023 - 7:14 PM - 7:14 PM

@CLAYCORD.COM….Yes they did. I used to get a Coke there whenever I went to Kragen’s, weird you’d mention that. I think I was “scoping out” a classmate that worked there too at one time.

Reality says… January 9, 2023 - 2:41 PM - 2:41 PM

Dunkin’ Hoenuts? Really. I threw up in my mouth a little just thinking about this place.

Another rave from the East Coast that is poop. When you’re used to eating snow your taste buds get stunted. Nothing from the East is good – KK, Dunkin’, White Castle…need more examples?

Also – these “imported” donuts that are made offsite and shipped in are loaded with MSG. How do you think they retain their “freshness” you make reference to?

They are made overnight and delivered first thing in the morning. It’s a way for the franchisee to save on costs when they have a limited space. I would guess they are made in the Walnut Creek place.

Gittyup January 9, 2023 - 3:26 PM - 3:26 PM

Now, I’ve got DONUTS on the brain. Every DONATE sign looks like DONUTS to me! I only buy DONUTS once every twelve years and eat them all in the car on the way home. That works out to an average of only one DONUT a month for an entire year. Then, I don’t buy DONUTS again for another twelve years. I figure that’s fair.

Luke January 9, 2023 - 3:57 PM - 3:57 PM

Not a fan of Dunkin’. Bring back Ghost Golf there!

Roz January 9, 2023 - 4:22 PM - 4:22 PM

Hey Mayor ~
I’m looking forward to more reviews of donut/doughnut shops.
I didn’t know about the one in Martinez and waiting to hear how many donut holes it gets.

King potato January 9, 2023 - 8:16 PM - 8:16 PM

Kings is the only shop for me and always has been! I can remember the days as a kid when my mom would walk in on a weekend morning with that unforgettable pink box full of delectable confectionery Heaven.

Jeff (the other one) January 9, 2023 - 8:20 PM - 8:20 PM

In my youth, I worked at 7-11, and they sold Dunkin’ Donuts, and the kruller was my favorite go to. Have not had one in years. I would say 3.5 of 5 is a reasonable score (for the donuts I have had), and 1.5 for Krispy kreme borders on generous (I always feel I am biting into an air pocket covered with sugar coated sugar).

I’m happy with Safeway’s donuts.

DD has decent coffee for a chain just as Winchells has decent donuts for a chain. Sadly, there are few Winchells left.

Alex B January 10, 2023 - 11:32 AM - 11:32 AM

Should mention Allstar donuts on Treat and Bancroft. It’s family owned and I believe they’re closed for medical reasons at the moment but they’re wonderful people who make REALLY good doughnuts. Give them a try when they open back up.
