Juneteenth (National Independence Day), also formerly known as Jubilee Day, which was a much better name, was when slaves in Texas were proclaimed free, because they had not previously received word that they had been granted freedom on January 01, 1863 by President Lincoln. Although, that freedom was based on the reality that the Union won the war. On June 19, 1865, we had a Democrat president, Andrew Johnson, not a Republican president. Slaves in the Union states weren’t all freed until December 1865, as the Emancipation Proclamation only applied to slaves in the Confederacy.

The Republican Party was formed in 1854, because the Whig Party collapsed, and they were primarily focused on preventing the spread of slavery in the western territories and new states in the west. The members of the then newly formed Republican Party recognized that slavery wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and most party leaders and elected officials publicly stated they weren’t going to interfere with slavery in the slave states, including Abraham Lincoln himself.

The Emancipation Proclamation was an offer that President Abraham Lincoln made to the Confederacy, that gave each of the Confederate States 100 days to end hostilities with the Union and rejoin the Union with slavery intact, should the Confederate States not take the offer, then slaves in the Confederacy, except for Confederate territory under Union control, would be emancipated. The constitutionality of Abraham Lincoln ending slavery in the Confederacy, except for Confederate territory under the control of the Union, while slavery continued in the Union, with a Proclamation and an Executive Order is in question, it would’ve been left to the US Supreme Court to decide, but ratification of the 13th Amendment rendered the matter moot. Then again, The Emancipation Proclamation would only have only resulted in ending slavery in the South as long as the North won the war. For someone that’s always invoking the Constitution and complains about Presidents using executive orders, I find it interesting that you’re so enthusiastic about President Lincoln’s use of an executive order that most assuredly violated the Constitution. President Lincoln was well known for violating the constitutional rights of Americans during his terms as president. Since President Lincoln treated the CSA as both a part of the USA and as a foreign country in his effort to bring the war to an end, The Emancipation Proclamation and its corresponding Executive Order would most assuredly have been found unconstitutional.

You need to take that up with President Lincoln, because he chose Andrew Johnson, a Union Democrat, as his running mate in 1864, when they ran on the National Unity Party ticket, but most State Republican Parties didn’t change their party name. President Lincoln basically had 3 choices for his running mate in 1864, stay with Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, which was extremely rare for a president to keep the same running mate when seeking reelection in the 19th century, choose Union Democrat Andrew Johnson in an effort to reunite the Union, or choose Frederick Douglass to elevate free blacks and former slaves and show the country we’ve moved beyond slavery. He made the decision that choosing Union Democrat, Andrew Johnson, would be best to reunite the nation.

I never fail to be shocked at how bad the roads are in California and wonder where our tax money goes. There is only one rest stop on the 680 to 101 route to San Luis Obispo from here and they closed it over a year ago, put in a bunch of solar panels, and it still says closed and the off ramp is full of weeds.
