Our first responders are forced to repeatedly deal with the mentally ill until such time as they commit a serious enough crime to catch a case which gets them no bail incarceration. As a result prisons and jails have become largest providers of mental health services in America. Unfortunately Prop 47 made it harder to keep ill persons in a controlled setting. Revolving door jails turn them back onto our streets. Just about takes killing an innocent to keep ’em locked up.

The, “Fourteenth Amendment, Section Three”, mentions nothing that applies to the President directly. Why would it mention Everyone (Senators, Representatives, and on down the line), but not the highest office in the land?

Local (Concord) politics: Since the state of California implemented rent control and “just cause” eviction rules (AB 1482) three years ago, I haven’t been paying close attention to that issue locally.
Has anyone looked at what is now being proposed for Concord? The Dec 12 city council agenda includes proposals which appear to me to basically cut and paste Oakland’s extreme rent control rules into Concord’s regulations. It may be even worse: Single Family homes and Condos owned by individuals like you and me would be included in the new “just cause” rules, with annual fees to pay for the administration and rental registry.
There are a lot of apartment owners complaining about this, but when I read the benched correspondence, not one single family home owner complained. I don’t think the city mailed out communication to inform the 20,000 plus homeowners who could be affected by this…At least I don’t recall receiving anything.
I am writing a letter to city council asking them to exempt homes owned by individuals from these rules. I am not planning on renting out my house, but someday that could happen due to health reasons or other life events. The “just cause” rules are intended for permanent rental housing, but city staff may have drafted their rules without making exceptions for the average homeowner who may want to rent out their home for a year or two.
Anyone else concerned about this?

We are finally moving in 14 months. It has been a long 7 year wait to get out of this state. The insanity I believe will continue for a couple more election cycles until the crime and “illegal” problem is so bad, among other issues that the state will finally flip back to red. We just can’t wait anymore and don’t want to end up being a possible victim of the out of control crime that is just going to get worse. We don’t even feel safe shopping in downtown WC anymore. First we stopped going to SF, then The Mall, and now our beloved downtown isn’t safe.
We found a really nice state, it’s CLEAN and no homeless and we don’t have to worry about our cars being broken into if we leave something in them. It is so nice to go to a state that prosecutes crime.
Congratulations on your move. Many of us plan to do the same but are taking care of elderly parents etc. When Walnut Creek started turning to s***, our elected officials ignored it. They clearly have no interest in prosecuting criminals as the optics are not favorable to DEI. Remember however, a liberal is simply a conservative who hasn’t been mugged yet. A few days ago an Oakland police officer was shot to death by a criminal that was breaking into an Oakland marijuana retail outlet. That was said to read. In August Martinez police officers shot and killed a guy breaking into one of these pot stores in Martinez. The City of Martinez will likely get sued over this, according to reports. These marijuana retail outlets draw criminals, that’s why I believe it was wrong for the City of Concord to greenlight pot stores coming to Concord. As I recall the City Council the City Manager, even the police Chief at the time, all strongly backed these time of retails outlets being located in Concord. Think of the revenue that will come into city coffers! While city leaders were enthusiastic about more money coming into Concord’s coffers, what of the criminal element these stores draw? Oakland has long had stores like this, they have a “district” where these stores are located. . Are the stores a risk to have in the community? I think so. I’m sure the family of this fallen offices believes that.

We’re still waiting for the Concord City Council to tell us how we’re going to benefit from the ABAG/MTC plan to put enough apartments in downtown Concord to house a population of 22,000 individuals, the plans to put ADUs in everyone’s backyard, the plans to tear down homes on large lots to build infill housing units, and the plans to build 12,500 housing units on the former CNWS property, 800+ housing units on the former USCG property, and several hundred housing units on the North Concord/Martinez BART Station parking lot. They want the City of Concord to reach a population of 200,000 as soon as possible.

The only defense some of the members of the Concord City Council have who were initially opposed to allowing these marijuana dispensaries is that the California State Legislature has continued to take away local control and made it more difficult for California’s cities and counties to deny these businesses from operating in local jurisdictions. Concord City Councilmember Dominic Aliano is pro-marijuana dispensaries and said he wasn’t going to “vote against residents getting their medications.”
