And now, the dumbest joke mom has ever shared with me: What’s the difference between a dirty bus stop and a lobster with breast implants? One is a crusty bus station. Good night.

Angostura Aromatic Bitters is 44.7% alcohol. That’s almost 90 proof! Hmmm…I wonder how this would taste on tater tots. Let me apologize ahead of time for any inappropriate posts later this evening. 🥔 🍹 😎

So Hanne seems like we frequent the same radio stations. Heard Tom mention your email the other day then Mark T. a couple days ago. Have a good weekend!

Hanne Jeppesen November 11, 2023 - 10:10 PM - 10:10 PM

Yes, Since KGO folded isn’t much to chose from. I always liked Tom Sullivan, even though I often disagree with him. When KGO was on I would either listen to Pat Thurston or Tom, I agreed more with Pat, but it would depend what her subject was. I try to watch Mark Thompson on Utube everyday, at least part of his show.

Book report: Through The Eye of A Needle, Hal Clement, 1978. Remember Needle> This is its sequel. Hunter the symbiote is still with Bob nearly 10 years later. The return to the island to look for clues that might help them find other symbiotes who might be looking for either Hunter or the criminal he had been chasing. Seems by staying with Bob all this time is making Bob ill to nearly life threatening. Instead of looking for the needle in a haystack they hope the needles from Hunter’s world are looking for him in hopes they can help Bob. This story fits swimmingly with the first.

never had rutabaga or sauerkraut stew, but as for the second options for stew, yes to all, but prefer the pot (less dishes to wash).

Hanne Jeppesen November 11, 2023 - 10:16 PM - 10:16 PM

Never had any of those. I don’t care for sauerkraut, but I like rutabaga, boiled with other veggies, or sometimes in the fall when I make mashed potatoes I might add rutabaga and celery root (my dad grew both) also in the fall I might add raw rutabaga to my salad, which often is shredded cabbage, carrots, celery root, perhaps some pomegranate seeds and then a blue cheese dressing, might also add chunks of apple.

B&D. Stew is wonderful if there’s few if any chopped potatoes.

RunDog November 13, 2023 - 8:53 AM - 8:53 AM

Thraxx: For Stew, try very small “Yukon Golds” sold in small mesh bags and cooked whole, if a bit longer.

Atticus Thraxx November 14, 2023 - 5:45 PM - 5:45 PM

It took three times reading to realize you were talking potato’s. I was thinking ‘Stew in a mesh bag? How would that work?” Yeah I’m an idiot. 🙃

What’s up with USPS carriers? Do they have an option to deliver or not deliver the grocery flyers? This actually has been going on for years and once reported to a manager at a store that the flyer didn’t get delivered and he was concerned. After all they paid for it to be delivered.
.
Now I see some stores are promoting “digital only” weekly ads. But they never have explained why. Is this another “woke” idea? I know it must be a hassle to carry those but there really has been not much discussion about it. Some probably hate to get them and others like them to plan shopping. And some of these company websites have bugs in making the transition plus they focus on mobile as if desktop is going away. Strange world we live in these daze.😲

3
3
miguel November 12, 2023 - 7:28 AM - 7:28 AM

@Captain Bebops do you also keep getting the flyers late? We keep getting them the day the offers expire or sometimes after.

Captain Bebops November 12, 2023 - 1:03 PM - 1:03 PM

When they do come they may arrive often as early as the Saturday before the week they are applicable and as late as Weds the day after the start of the applicable period. Nob Hill has them online as a PDF but still has printed ones in the store on the “digital only” week. Safeway is doubling up with the second week comes along with the first. Lucky’s always sends a printed one but only their mobile app gets things right (and Nob Hill/Raley’s is still trying to work that one out). This must be an Agenda 2030 thing.

RunDog November 11, 2023 - 11:18 AM - 11:18 AM

💫 Run Dog slept late 💤 and is flabbergasted by Thraxx’s comment. 🤮 There has to be an easier and more pleasant way to get wasted than on Bitters. 🤢 Even at 90 proof. 😬 Also, confused and annoyed by the time change … whatever the heck it’s called. 🥴

your neighbor the immigrant November 11, 2023 - 5:34 PM - 5:34 PM

Drove to SF yesterday, and was riding behind this Jaguar that had all these crazy looking cameras and had a logo that read Waymo. I google it, and this is a self driving taxi. You will download the app and request the ride just like you will with uber or lift and it shows up with no driver. It was really weird to see this lady sit in the passenger seat with no one on the driver side next to her. I guess this is Artificial Intelligence everyone is talking about.

4
1
Captain Bebops November 11, 2023 - 6:13 PM - 6:13 PM

Self driving cars as I understand, currently required to have a driver to take over if something goes wrong. So that lady probably has the job of taking over even by a remote if things start to go wrong.

2
1
your neighbor the immigrant November 11, 2023 - 9:19 PM - 9:19 PM

I hope that is how it works. Still it was really weird to see no driver in there. Would you like that job Or would you like to be a passenger?

RunDog November 12, 2023 - 12:30 PM - 12:30 PM

I noticed the other day that they must have imposed a lower speed limit for the large, driverless trucks, large delivery trucks and 18 wheelers. They were all in the right lane actually holding up traffic. It looked like the might be going 55 miles per hour. There were also a lot fewer driverless cars on the road as opposed to commute hours.

‘I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter’ is gray when they’re done making it, they add the color at the end. Do with that what you need to.
At the end of the Cold War in 1989, I was attached to a unit who had trouble finding me work in my MOS without an actively annoying enemy so they made me the Battalion Commander’s driver. But my .45 qualification was almost two years old so they sent me off with a bunch of officers to qualify one morning as that’s what most officers carried. To this day I have never seen a sadder, more pathetic attempt at marksmanship en masse. Like special-needs bad. They all passed only because they were grading each other. I separated honorably that winter. As the Berlin Wall fell behind me, which I found poetic. Though no one else seemed to. But that’s ego for ya.
Speaking of poetic, Shakespeare rules. 400 years later and he still can’t be touched. The good stuff anyway.
I can’t even watch nature shows anymore. They invariably get to the part where man encroaches and causes no end of grief and it bums me out to the point I can’t watch. Except for Shark Week, those savages.
A bullet fired and a bullet dropped will hit the ground at the same time, just one will be real far away. That’s important to understand, I’m here to tell ya.
Ever go a whole week without lying? Sounds easy right? But check yourself carefully and you may be surprised.
I take a weird pride in putting a paid bill back in the mail box the same day I received it. Not saying that always happens, but I’m pleased when it does.
I haven’t used soap or shampoo in probably tens years. Unnecessary unless you’re a hairy bugger. Hot water and friction daily. Prove me wrong.
It’s only happened once that I remember but all brand new and warm tires on a warm newly paved road is pretty close to sex.
Really attractive and really ugly people should wear a bell or something so they don’t startle us normals when they show up suddenly.
What I love about farmer’s markets is if you buy anything in quantity, they’ll give you a bunch more for free.
I never understood porn theaters. So what’s the game plan here? I mean I know what the plan is, but how? And then what? Can’t imagine anything sadder and I have a damn good imagination.
Ground chia seed is crazy good for you. And ground flax. Gut biome matters. Get your gut right and your gums right and that’s half the battle.
Browning HiPower. Anything with Browning in the name really, but damn… that Hi-Power. I’ll even forgive that it only comes in pimp caliber.
I dig everything about Frank Zappa except his music. Never mind, errant and not fully formed thought. But the music is pretty bad, that’s the important take-away.
Whoever first said the female of the species is deadlier than the male may have been on to something.
I just decided I will never eat Jello again. Seems a weird hill to die on, but die on it I shall.
I know this isn’t the Politcis thread but is anyone else getting bitter that the two presumptive choices for President in a nation of 332 million is a dottering drooling uber-senior and a craven opportunistic half-mad pervert? I sure am. We should get The Mayor to run. I’d kick into that campaign.
IPA isn’t beer. They’re lying to you. It’s beer-like, but it ain’t beer. Straight from your buddy Atticus that is.
I once new a kid who’s skin was the same color a skin-colored BandAids. I think I heard he died.
Is it okay to punch a guy who has nail polish on? Asking for a friend.
There used to be cross-eyed people all the time when I was kid. Don’t see that much anymore.
I wish I liked baked potatoes more than I do. I see people lose their minds over that and I envy that. But I have tater tots, I ought to be grateful.
It’s okay to be mean to mean people. And if it’s not, well it’s too late now, it has provided me too much joy for having only been punched twice. 😉
I loved there’s genuine appreciation for veterans, especially for those who’s service cost them more than they got, unlike me, but I’m starting to despise ‘professional veterans’. But that’s probably my own deal.
There’s too much good television, including streaming. Never thought in a million years I’d ever say that.
I’ll still use BART when I come down to the Bay Area, but not unarmed. No I don’t have a license. Got a nasty lawyer though. Almost as good, but not cost effective. Until it is.
Yams and Sweet Potatoes are the same thing, I looked it up. Not cool S. 😉
As I write this its 137 days, 2 hours, 33 minutes and 22 seconds until opening Day!

Cowellian November 12, 2023 - 8:30 AM - 8:30 AM

When oleomargarine was invented, it was white and looked like lard. So the manufacturers started adding the yellow coloring. The dairy states successfully lobbied to ban adding color to the margarine, and the manufacturers responded by selling yellow food coloring with the margarine. I would imagine that adding the food coloring probably felt a whole lot like churning butter.
In any case, we only buy real butter.

While normally I’d bow to your esoteric root vegetable knowledge, I will find a way to post a picture of a can that clearly says both Yams and Sweet Potatoes on the label S. Or I’m having tiny strokes. Fun either way. 🤷

RumDog November 13, 2023 - 9:14 AM - 9:14 AM

“Are Sweet Potatoes and Yams the Same?”

“Although sweet potatoes and yams are both root vegetables, they are not related to one another and differ in taste, texture and appearance.”

https://www.foodnetwork.com/thanksgiving/thanksgiving-sides/yams-vs–sweet-potatoes

“… yams taste earthy …” “Sweet potatoes are known for their … sweet flavor.”

Atticus Thraxx November 13, 2023 - 5:26 PM - 5:26 PM

I stand corrected. But as God is my witness I saw cans that had both on the label. I shall investigate.

Cyn November 13, 2023 - 7:35 PM - 7:35 PM

@Atticus Thraxx
You’re not having tiny strokes…..Princella has “Cut Sweet Potatoes – Cut Yams in Light Syrup” on their front label; however, they’re still different as “S” said. And as “Rundog” said, sweet potatoes are sweeter than yams.

RunDog November 12, 2023 - 12:16 PM - 12:16 PM

I remember the lard with food coloring and my mother mixing it.. We lived in Los Angeles and my father hadn’t yet been “called up” to return to the Army because of the “Korean Conflict” after his service during WWII. My mother brought some home and I watched her mixed it. There was a lot of labor involved. She grew on the family farm and the girls would milk the cow before breakfast in the morning.and churn butter later in the day. The lard mixed with a yellow coloring must have seemed odd to my mother. Nylons were also rationed and she wore them to work every day. She was very careful not to get “runs” in them. Tires were also in short supply.

Don’t be too hard on yourself regarding the music of Frank Zappa. Listen to all three acts of Joe’s Garage twice, and you will be hooked. Forget the lyrics, just focus on the music.
I’m still working on Trout Mask Replica, but Captain Beefheart is really way out there.

I’m gonna have to find a way to reapproach it objectively Fearless One. But you’re not the first person to insist on Joes Garage.

Nice. I’m a big fan of his lectures. Had many of them on tape at one point. His ‘ Six Easy Pieces’ and ‘ Six Not-So Easy Pieces’ enjoy a space on my bookshelf but truth be told I only got a third of the way on the first book when my nose started to bleed and I started to panic. I moved to Kip Thorns Black Holes &Time Warps and that was marginally better as I could easily skip the parts I didn’t have the math for, which was a lot. Maybe one of those ‘Complete Idiots..’ guides is more my speed. Or a coloring book. 🧐
Nice pull OG.

@ORIGINAL G..….I just drove over the Walnut Grove bridge Tuesday. My Dad took a Kodachrome of it in 1952, it must have been a pretty big deal then otherwise he wouldn’t have wasted his color film.

RunDog November 16, 2023 - 5:40 PM - 5:40 PM

I have sailed under both of these. With the Walnut Grove, you sail up and sound a horn, then wait for the Bridge Keeper to come over and open the bridge. You sail in circles until he does. Sometimes it might take up to 30 minutes, depending on where he is and what he’s doing. We had a 28 foot mast so it was touch and go, We dredged through the mud in some spots, but made it okay. It was one of a few draw bridges we travelled under on the way to Lost Slough in the Delta.
